16" split rims on 25

I am using factory one piece 16' inch rims with no problems from 1968 FJ40 they are riveted and got hub cap clips.

they look exactly same as FJ25 rims, only difference is they are 16 X 5.5 and missing that typical FJ25 funky hole. above valve. :bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

Hey Archie, I kinda remembered that there was a story behind those rims. Great to know they fit...can you find more locally?

Dean,

They are difficult to come by and expensive, although I have collected about 7 or 8 extra rims over last 2 years and paid approx $250 in total but all of them have got surface rust and missing some or all hub cap clips.

Fortunately I could score a nice set for myself with all hub cap clips intact and no rust but then I paid $750 for 4 rims.

Let me know if you guys are interested, I can send you some pics, I believe all of them can be restored, it just that I don't have skills to work on them and hence I paid top $$ for a nice set.

Hi Archie, pictures would be great.

How many more you figure you can find? Might be interesting to see what it would cost to ship a bunch on a palet by long boat :hhmm:

I have been thinking about something that John (LITP) wrote to me in an email in a response to a question I had asked him about something else but it has me thinking about FJ25 axles vs early FJ40 axles.

Lets say I bought a set of axles from an early 40 with the centered rear. Then I switch out both axles on one of my 25's.

Does that mean I could still use my 16" wheels from my 25?

Does it mean that I can more easily find brake parts, shoes, cylinder kits, etc?

Is there any down side to switching out axles or is it all upside (except that my car is not strictly speaking STOCK any longer).

I am not the smartest guy when it comes this sort of thing, a novice at best, but I fail to see why I shouldn't switch the axles and make all these problems go away.

Am I missing something? Thanks, Rick

I guess the bigger question is what you want to do with your 25, and if your a purist.

Edit: I am a purist, so I would keep it stock, and find good rims that fit...but that's just me.

You can run the FJ25 rims on any FJ40 axle. There are tons of options if you don't want to keep it original, that's up to you.

Least change option is running a 1/2" - 3/4" spacer on the front with extended wheel lugs and aftermarket or FJ40 welded rims. I did that for a few years before finding 25 wheels.

Another option would be something along the line of what I did in my Krusty thread. Change the steering arms and tie rods to FJ40 style and you can run welded (not riveted) 15" wheels with the brakes and everything else remaining FJ25. Since one of the 25 TRE's is unobtainium anyhow it may be best to go this way anyhow.......... ;)

The 25 brakes couldn't be simpler, but if you don't like them change them out. Personally, if you don't upgrade to discs I wouldn't bother changing anything at the wheel. I wouldn't consider FJ40 drums an upgrade, you can have FJ25 cylinders lined and rebuilt and shoes relined much less than buying quality FJ40 replacement components. Then you get to deal with making FJ40 drum brakes work correctly - see the FJ40 section.

Thanks for all that info Jim, I am going to check out the spacer idea. I have tried Jeep, Chevy, Ford and Nissan Patrol wheels. I still think some version of Jeep will work but have not found the right set yet. I am 0 for 8 on various options. I would buy an original FJ25 wheel in a minute to complete one set but so would everyone else with a 25 if one could be found.

While I am perhaps not the dedicated purist that Dean is, I would like to keep as much stock as possible without sacrificing safety and ease (and cost) of maintenance.

Thanks again for the detail, I really appreciate that.

I was looking at stock 16" steel Tacoma wheels as an option for trail tires. Havent actually gotten a set yet though to try.

eBay Motors: 05-08 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 16" steel wheels rims set of 4 (item 360069017984 end time Jul-16-08 08:14:30 PDT)

Actually a set like that Tacoma spare would look pretty good on one of mine. I am just hoping to find some older 16's that work, paint them black and finally be able to a set of hub caps!

A 1/4" spacer shouldn't look that bad...do you have any to see how it would look?
