I hear that a 13BT Toyota diesel engine will drop right into a 1980 bj-44? It has a factory 4 speed tranny with a vacumme switch 4x4. I just bought the 13 Bt off of ebay and was wondering if it will drop right into my 1980 BJ-44? does anyone have any input?? thanks. I paid 3200. for the engine with turbo, alternator, bellhousing and clutch. Did I get a good deal? anyone know stock good compression for a 13BT?

Don't you mean a BJ42? Never heard of a BJ44.

Sounds like a good deal, good luck......

BJ40, BJ41, BJ42, BJ43, BJ44 we got them all here.

And let's not forget the BJ46.

Dropping a 13B-T into a BJ44 is a unbolt-bolt-in process. No worries.

Should be a real simple upgrade for your application.

yah, the rest of the world got ripped when it came to the good toyotas...

Forgot to mention that you will need a longer throttle cable.

A 2B throttle cable will work fine for road conditions but once you hit the trails and get a bit of BJ44 frame flex the 2B throttle cable will over rev your 13B-T as it is too short for a 13B-T.

To correct the problem in my BJ44 I used a BJ74 throttle cable. Never had a problem since.

warning cruiseraddict

the $3,300 buy it now engine in florida was a 13B-T, but it does not look like a land cruiser engine and may have some parts that will need modification or replacement.

5 trained eyes confirmed this....

mid wheel base units, between the 42 and the troopie...
i had a 44 here for a while and i loved the length but i would rather have the updated 46 version if i had a choice...

Yep!

BJ46s had/have 3Bs, A/C, Full Floaters, H55s.

Even heard but can not confirm that BJ46s had an engine upgrade option of a 13B-T.

humm, you would know better than me but i thought the 13BT started in 1985...

Like I said " I don't know, I only heard and can not confirm" so go figure maybe the info was wrong. I don't know for a fact that a BJ46 had a 13B-T upgrade engine option.

13B-T in 1985?

http://cruisers.bitwalla.com/information/engines.html

BJ46s were offered in 1984 so it is plausible either way, Wayne-o.

makes me think of the rumoured BJ55 back in 79-80...
i think someone found one in Holand but no one could confirm the serial number...
anything is possible.
cheers

what do you mean? What do you think it will need? I already have it?

That motor was clearly out of a Dyna or some sort of Cab over Toyota truck. The fact that he implied that it was for a BJ74 was lame IMO.
Notice the TURBO emblem is read from the rear, and the PS reservoir is at the rear of the engine... it was set up to be serviced from the back. And what up with that intake?
I'm sure everything will work out, you will just have some extra work to do getting stuff moved around. One bonus is that I believe the industrial version of the 13B-T has the PS pump built into the timing cover.. or is it the vacuum pump.. anyhow..
Congrats on the purchase!
Have fun with the instal. You will love the 13B-T in your 44

Oh ya.. Compression. Contrary to what the 3B/13B-T FSM says (427 for both)
The compression spec on the 13BT and 12H-T is 397psi, min 283 and no more that 28psi difference between cylinders. Greg and I have tested a LOT of 13B-Ts and 12H-Ts and they typically are in the 330-370 psi. Be sure to set the valves before you do a test. And good luck finding a fitting to adapt your gauge to the motor.

Cheers

Off topic ....sort of....but where do you find an adapter to fit the 13BT for compression checks? Was wondering this myself just recently and you reminded me about it.

thanks guys the 2 B is out and prepping the 13 Bt

Ready to drop in the 13BT. Thanks for the input guys. I hope I did not buy a 3400. paper weight.
