Hi Gang,

A few questions regarding the JDM BJ74's 13B-T engine oil viscosity & capacity.

First, what is the visc and capacity spec? I note that at http://www.bitwalla.com/cruisers/information/specs.html they recommend a range of visc. For the Vancouver area, 20/40 might be right. What are you using? What is the capacity when you do an oil change?

My Jap owners manual is tough to read. :)

Thanks,

Bruce in Tsawwassen

Hi Allstone,

Great to hear from you and thanks.

I just got the unit back from Rob Millsen today. He installed rear belts, did an injector repair, adjusted valves and a few other things. Great guy and very good work. From this, I highly recommend him.

I wish to change the oil and want to make sure its the right stuff. I'm not sure that our climate is the same as where my BJ74 came from in Japan.

Hi Bruce:

Yup, most of the guys who have run the 3B here for years swear by 15W40 diesel rated oil. It doesn't get cold enough here to warrant a thinner or synthetic oil, although some people run 0W40 diesel rated synthetic in their rigs.

How's the smoke coming out of the tailpipe...a lot less? Any difference in power? I'd be curious to know how much your mileage increases as you go through your first tank of fuel.

Cheers.

Hi Stone,

After Rob did the work, there is more power and less smoke. Idle is much better. He explained that from a standing start, if you punch it, there will be black smoke, esp if its before the Turbo kicks in. And that wasted fuel.

I think I'm up to 24+ MPG (imp) right now. Better. But I'll change the oil tomorrow.

Where do you buy your 15-40?

Delo 400 15/40 is a great oil.

Esso XD 15/40 is good too.

I ran Esso XD 0/40 in my BJ74 for the winter. Switching back to dino 15/40 in a month.

Check out http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi? for some good reading on oils and such.

There is some interesting information if you dig and read a while.

Whatever oil you choose, make sure it is a diesel rated oil.

Wix filters are a good alternative to Toyota.

Reference the 2H fuel filter for you 13BT.

There are a few threads in the Intl section that has dealt with this in the past...a search will yield more reading.

Crappy Tire for the Shell Rotella. Whalley Mart carries the Esso XD, I believe. They also carry Mobil 1, Esso XD3 (synth), and have their own diesel oil (Tech 2000) in bulk. The Wal*Mart Tech 2000 15W40 is only $29.99/5 gal pail, is CI-4 rated (highest diesel oil rating), and is rumored to maybe manufactured for them by Shell...might be worth looking into. Greg's been looking at less-expensive but good quality alternatives that I will probably also take.

Greg's also got me into adding a liter of Lucas HD Oil Stabilizer with my oil. Seems to quiet the motor a lot. $12.99/bottle at Crappy Tire or Lordco. HTH.

You still doing this Stone? I thought you stopped. I did not add one when I changed over to Exxo XD 0/40 in the fall.

It also seems the Cdn Superstore housebrand (Pres choice) oil "may" be Esso XD 15/40 dyno oil. Three stars on the bottom of the bottle (Like Esso or Exxon) and it appears to have all the same rating. $16.00 netted me 7 liters for the oil change on my BJ60 the other day, and considering the local cardlock has Delo 400 15/40 for $17.99 (4 liter jug) I liked the value. I do like Delo 400 though...

IF you go into a cold place, 0w40 shell rotella works really good. Really makes it easier to crank over.
Once we go over O up here I will be switching.

I have used these cheaper alternatives and have never had a engine problem, mind you I have not owned a cruiser longer than 1.5 years.

One of our BJ60s with 500K on the OD drove better than most low milage units and the owner ran this less expensive oil.

The guy who purchased the carcase from me for a conversion ripped the engine down and had toyota check all the bearings and parts, they were all still withing spec.

I have used Mobil1 15W50 syn. with a K&N filter(hp3001). About 7l cap. with filter change. I would like to start using MolyslipE again, like I used to in the old FJ40, but I'm not sure of its compatability with syn. oil, anyone know?

Thanks for all your replies & suggestions.

Boy, it would be great to start a "Best Practices" section to this site.

Anyway, I had the oil change done at Mr. Lube. I had already purchased an oil filter at Lordco. However, Mr. L had the same in stock, so I used theirs and saved the other for future onsiderations. They used 6 ltrs of 15/40 & I added a ltr of Lucas oil conditioner. Total cost (not incl the Lucas) about $40 Cdn.

Thanks gang,

I use either Amsoil heavy duty diesel or Mobil Delvac 1 ONLY. I wont ever use dino again. Why ever go backwards technologically? If you use a quality synthetic and change your filter regularly you can safely lengthen your change intervals. Oil analysis proves this. Now not only are you getting WAY superior protection, you arent spending extra money because youre extending your intervals.

The absolute best thing is a bypass oil filter.

Bypass filters

I justy did my first change with the shell rotella, but I think I will use Amsoil for the rest of the summer.
