12ht Rebuild, just about finished -couple questions?

Spent another couple hours on the rebuild, nearly have the turbo ready to bolted on along with the exhaust manifold. This side of the engine is 95% completed, still have power steering pump. vac lines and a few others things to bolt on!

I have started on installing the exhaust manifold and turbo, I have noticed that my exhaust manifold is held on by 12 bolts and not studs with washers & nuts as per the engine manual, can anyone tell me if they have bolts on the 12ht exhaust manifold?

Have been checking around. The reason I have bolts is, when you wish to replace the exhaust manifold gasket all you need to do is remove the bolts and slide in another gasket.

With studs you have to undo all the turbo fittings etc so too be able to pull the exhaust manifold off to clear the studs to place a new gasket on?

I would say the original 12ht engine I got has had a new gasket at one stage the mechanic put bolts in so to make it easier to replace the gasket in the future. The engine manual says you should replace the nuts with new anyway on a exhaust gasket change?

It is really hard to line up a manifold in the vehicle, in particular with a turbo hanging off it, when you have nothing to position the manifold on. Leaning over the guard and really needing two hands to hold the whole thing, leaves no hands to jiggle a bolt into place. Studs and nuts are stronger than bolts too. With your rebuild, you're not likely to have to remove anything for a very very long time, unless to replace the turbo with a GTurbo so it probably won't matter much.

Yes true, but remember the gaskets come 2 by 3 ports so with bolts you loosen half off 3 ports and remove completely the other 3 ports do that gasket replacement then move onto the next.

But your right it will probably never need a replacement anyway?

Dont ever ever EVER get that engine dirty. Looks like it should be mounted on a wall and admired by all. Pity u have to run a bonnet haha. I'd stare at that motor in my car all day long

Put all the vacuum lines back on this evening and have the intakes sitting on top of the engine ready to bolt on tomorrow evening?

This vacuum switch which is off the air intake filter of the 12ht (from a 60 series) has a plugin electrical cable fitting, can anyone tell me what ithe wires connects to in the 60 series?

Some models have a light on the dash that show when the air filter is blocked. This is the switch that triggers the light.

Where is the best place to install EGT probe on my 12HT? (I have figured out where to install the boost gauge connection) but where do I drill a hole for the EGT sensor? what size hole & tap thread?

Pre turbo in the manifold is preferred. Gives a more accurate/quicker reading with no losses through the turbo.
Post turbo is easier. A couple of inches down in the dump pipe. Weld a bung in and no need to remove the turbo.
Although I have seen them drilled and tapped with the turbo still installed, I don't recommend it.
Drill and tap to suit the guage you have. Some have different threads
