At this point in time purely hypothetical.

How hard would it be to swop 12HT engine for 3F-E (or any other Toyota petrol engine)?
Got HJ61 with manual gearbox.

Mods: 24-12V, fuel system, exhaust, electrics, .......

Computer controlled petrol engine = relatively difficult due to wiring harness integration
Mechanically controlled petrol engine = relatively easy

But why in the world would you want to switch from diesel to gasoline?

don't do it ....... that's a step in the wrong direction.

well, if you want less power, worse fuel economy and a much more complicated engine/electrical system/fuel system ..... then go for it!

An OBD1 engine like the 3FE is pretty easy to handle electrically. At least I think so (having done it). I'm not saying the 3FE is the best engine of all the options but it's all analog and doesn't need much to run.

A carbed engine will be the most simple option as long as you don't have miles of vacuum lines to tackle but you won't have fuel injection if fuel injection is something you want.

Was my Shiner Bock laced with something or did I read he's wanting to swap in a 3FE in place of a factory diesel?:eek::eek:

this may be one of the craziest ideas ive ever heard. but to each his own i guess. Hey erik, ill trade you my 3fe for your 12ht straight across, what do you say? :grinpimp:

I've read elsewhere on MUD that a country, either the Netherlands or Denmark, is outlawing the old diesels due to their high particulate pollution levels. Consequently, it's a good time to buy a used diesel Cruiser from there.

Yep! I'll send you my 2F and, wait for it........ all the beer you can drink for your 12ht

Hi guys,
The move from 12HT is very painful, but tax reason driven. Starting 1st Jan 2014 I will have to pay € 2.600 road tax per year. Our government is hunting oldtimer diesel cars like maniacs.

With the low mileage I do it is worth to consider an engine swop towards petrol (I pay only € 120/year road tax).

I also get the advise to switch to 1UZ engine from Lexus LS400. More work and complex. But the potential end result is very tempting.

Preferred the 12HT, but what can I do with this absurd taxes.......

That's insane, man. Why are they doing that, or is it just ever increasing pollution concerns?

And I thought I had it bad with $500 a year in registration, which is solely based on weight, not fuel type.

How about a 5.3 or 6.0 Chevy motor swap instead of that Lexus motor? The swap to a small block Chevy would be cheaper and you get all the power of a V8. Then send me that diesel. Let me know when you want me to send payment for it. ;)

Could you upgrade to a newer Toyota diesel motor and see lower road tax since it is a newer motor? If so, you could move to a 1HZ or 1HD-T fairly easily.

The 3fe is a mechanically easy swap especially if you have a donor truck to pull parts off of. I did a write up on my 2F to 3FE swap and will answer any questions I can should you do this swap.

If you're going to convert to a different engine, then as mentioned above the 5.3 vortec is relatively easy. The 3FE will be just as difficult as anything else in your HJ because you have to re-do engine mounts, install a fuel pump with high pressure lines, wiring, exhaust, etc. Basically everything that you would do to convert to a 3fe, you will have to do to convert to a 5.3.

I just completed a 2FE into a 1981 FJ60 with high comp pistons, and when we were finished we could just as easily have done a small block. The vortec has more power, better efficiency, and a cheaper engine.

Prost!

Whatever conversion it will be. Complex by definition.

A GM Vortec block isn't always cheaper. Can buy a complete LS400 here for less that EUR 1500. Haven't looked for a GM block so far.

Thanks for the input. Keep it coming.
