Are you sure you have to redo engine mounts? I just used off the shelf mounts with my swap. I'm using two passenger side mounts I believe (the ones with the offset stud). I'm not sure if the frame is different on an HJ though.

Will the 3FE bolt to the existing transmission in your HJ? If so that's another plus.

I used the stock fuel lines with no issues. I would recommend an FJ62 gas tank with the in-tank pump because it scavenges fuel better when fuel level gets slow. However, I used the inline pump (from summit) for a long time and it worked fine.

If you use a stock 2F flywheel you get the added benefit of all that inertia when crawling (less engine stalls).

Here's another one :crybaby:
Makes me cry every time I think of it. I'm so in love with the 12H-T. Even though it's a 30yr old engine, it's simply fantastic.
But road tax changes leave little alternatives it you want to keep driving. For our government there's no such thing as a old-timer diesel amateur.

So either I put it in the garage for another 13 years, or swap the diesel engine for a petrol.

Anyone with a similar setup and a nice V8: healthy body, 280k km, excellent service conditions, and is ready to swap. Maybe we can charter a 2-way container US-NL.

:p

Really, you should consider "moving on" by selling it to one of us in the US.

That is an option as well (even if I didn't give it a serious thought so far). Not change the engine. But change cars. Preferably for a J6 with petrol engine stronger than stock. First registration: 1986 or earlier.

Likely that shipping costs by 20 ft container are lower than new engine ;)

Hello ErikHJ,

I'm facing the same problem with my HJ61, in the netherlands.

I'm considering changing the registration to a business car, and start my own company in order to pay only 400 euro a year.... I could never trade in my 12HT....

No rear seats makes non sense for my kind of use. So register as company (grey) car is not my solution.

Hi Eric
you could sell it to me because I live in France and we don't have this stupid laws until now

Hi Paul,
A Dutch friend of mine living in France said the same. Seems that in France tax laws on cars will not change. The French government has already problems enough to worry about a few oldtimer diesel engines.

Switch cars, sell it, engine swop ...... Just have to think options over. For sure I will loose € 10k on the "investment" in my HJ61. :crybaby:

At the end I just want to :steer:

Hi Eric
I always thought the Dutch are sooo liberal about smokers ;)
So you should buy a house in France and get the car registered over here.
My HJ61 cost me just 180 Euro insurance per year and no tax at all:)

Welcome Netherlands!

I payed €2.100 (took the plates of litterally yesterday) road tax on my 1980 HJ45, and have been doing it for years! Just because it is registered with seats in the back.
My Hj61 is registered as a truck, i.e. no seats in the back, and NO passengers allowed; €750 a year...

I did drive my HJ45, and lived with it, after all, these cars will never be reasonable from an economical standpoint (tokk the plates of, it's dumb to have both registered besides the wife's BJ42)

For DK I knew you were already in a bad shape......

But now I have to deal with it and find creative solutions. Petrol engine is for the mileage I do acceptable. The HJ61 is my third car plus Merc Vito in my company.

Sure I will miss the character and power of the 12HT. I believe it is the best engine for the HJ61. But now I have to opt for the 2nd best.

Easiest way: change with US owner of a nice petrol version. Good for both.

Else switch engine for petrol version.

So: anyone in the US want to drive a nice 12HT? While I will take care of your J6 petrol in the Netherlands. Just let me know.

Erik what model years does the new road tax effect? Or is it determined in a different way?

Sounds like you guys need to move to the US. Only costs me ~$70 USD to register my FJ60 for 2 years + couple hundred for insurance.

As for engine swaps, the problem with the 1UZ FE is adapting it to a 4WD transmission. There's quite a bit of support for Supra 2WD transmissions, but very little for 4WD truck transmissions. It might be possible to do something using a Jeep AW4 automatic bolted to an LS400 bellhousing (same-ish transmissions) , but I haven't looked that far into it.

Road tax is based on weight and fuel and type of vehicle. For the segment of HJ61 there was an "oldtimer law" that all > 25 yrs (So first registration 1986 or earlier) were free.

Now a diesel engine only gets oldtimer status at 40 years after first registration. So starting 1st Jan 2014 we will start paying. So still have 7 months to solve it.

So I'm looking for a petrol Landcruiser (or Merc G) with first registration 1986 or earlier.

So, you'd consider taking a FJ60, providing it was manufactured by 1986 or earlier, straight across in a permanent trade? You may want to post in the "for sale" section, with photos of your truck, conditions of the trade and cost of shipping to/from your country.

Already done..... ;)

If mutual intentions are there, conditions are always easy to solve. Shipping is purely a practical issue.

And if it doesn't work out. Plan B. Swop engines.
