True, but he currently has a 2H and my reccomendation was to take the rig on a few trips fully loaded. To see exactly how much power etc he is going to need to do what he needs to do :hillbilly:

He has just done that and is not happy:D

hmmmmmm......

i am now thinking 12ht with intercool or 1hz with turbo and inter cool. i will look into the chevy duramax, but seem that there would be much modifications, has anyone done this?

I know I'm a little off subject--but nice speed rail rack. Reminds me of my days of doing car rigs in the movies.

If you're considering a 1HZ and turbocharging it, why not a 1HD-T?
Direct injection means faster starting and better fuel economy.

Sure it will perform better with a 1HD-T but believe are much more expensive engines .. at least here in Panamá are.

This is only my opinion but i would stay with the 12-HT and as a guess that engine is more reliable, compared with the 1H-DT and 1HZ-T.I heard through the grapevine the 1HZ was fitted with a softer crankshaft and cannot take the power of a turbo, that maybe just a rumour though. Also the 12-HT is an OHV pushrod type engine with gear driven cams isn't it mudders ?.Also with a few modifications maybe that engine can produce the same power as the 1H-DT, 1HD-FT and 1HD-FTE 4.2td and have more reliability.I maybe wrong so don't buy an engine on my say so.

thanks, i am able to take out the picture. thank you all for the advice very helpful.

Hey, so what did you decide? The Duramax suggestion was really a joke (though it would be sweet).. I suspect it would be overly complicated IMHO. If you really wanted to put a diesel in there that would serve you well with that amount of weight: I would heavily consider a 12 valve Cummins with manual tranny... but there are compication with that as well, i.e. engine wieght, the manual tranny is kinda rough shifting (NV4500) some would say.
But, it can be done:

Cummins 6AT 3.4 in Toyota FJ55 - Cummins 4BT Forums

CIS Auto Web's Diesel Land Cruisers

same swap, just more pics....

i am almost decided on a 12ht with an inter cooler, with an inter cooler i maybe able to increase the boost power a bit in case i need it (any ideas on this?) and 5 speed transmission. one of the major draw is the easy bolt on to my cruiser. i am still trying to figure out how much modification on a 1hz or a 1hdt. i am also looking into lowering the weight of my cruiser...thanks:bang:

The 12HT would be easier and if you could get one at the right price and condition, thatS the way to go.
The downside is parts are not so readily available as only a handfull of countries got them and they were only in production for about 5 years.
I dont think you would need a intercooler and it would block off access to the engine.
With what you have regarding the height and weight,a good steady 50-60 mph is the best you can hope for on a very good road.
If you going to countries with not much infrastructure 30-40mph might be the best you can hope for.

The 1HZ would need new frame bracket welded on for the engine mounts. A gearbox with 21 splines..
You would need a new tacho. An aftermarket set up would be better
I think your oil pressure and temp gauge are a plug in.
The exhaust would need some thought as it exits the 1HZ in an awkward spot on a 45.
The PS pump and vac pump are all self contained on the 1HZ
Send a PM to Radd Cruisers. Im sure he put a 1HZ into a 45

2H and 12H-T are 2 totally diferent beast ..
12ht the go it looks as if designed specificatley for hj47 im in middle of my conversion 83 picked up donour vech. hj61 import for $8,000 and 167k use altnator, stater motor and mounts of h unless P.S
fitted 61 radiator and ac cond. also looking at using P.S
have been told intake heater not required in aust. but will be instal with 1 or 2 min. timer

Just throwing it out there, but if/when you do decide to swap, I would be willing to give your 2h and 4 speed a good home in my 73 FJ40 - High mileage is ok, I would rather rebuild it and make it pretty before installing it. PM if you are serious.

Thanks!

A turbo on your 2h doesn't have to be expensive. I installed mine for less than 600 with gauges. It makes a world of difference on my cruiser (HJ60). Hills that I used to do the 3rd 4th gear dance now are easily pulled in 4th and accelerate even.
I flipped my manifold to use for the turbo. I built an adapter to bolt to my turbo bought off of craigs list. The rest is pretty straight forward. Its not bolt on easy but im not sure a engine swap is either.

All this being said a 12 valve cummins would be great....but noisey and heavy.

My cruiser weighs about 6300lbs. I've towed 1500lbs with it across a few provinces without complaint. And that was with 3.7 and 33's

I wouldn't give up on the old girl yet.

installed a 12ht

i just want to thank you all. some are still asking what i ended up doing. i installed the 12ht on my cruiser and very happy with it. and my 2h was sold before the 12ht arrived from australia. again thanks you all.
