hey guys!
been having some fun in the shed today
fitted a cheapy modified oil catch can and one of those kinugawa wastegates from eBay (17psi spring)
also fitted a stebel nautilus airhorn which is a drastic improvement over stock

I'd like some feedback from you guys that have catchcans fitted.

the wastegate works spot on and holds 14psi (less than advertised but it's consistent) plus I got rid of the crappy screw in in-line actuator thicker which would always bleed down anyway

the catch can come with 10mm barb fittings on it and I macgyvered a reducer to fit (the rocker cover has a 17mm pipe hanging out the side)

so I took it for a run and I was going really well, I was happy with how it was running until I got home and popped the hood to check everything and the dipstick had popped out and basically dropped it's guts in my engine bay and probably lost a full 8lts out of it ...... what a fkn mess........ all over the brickwork....... all over my pride.... :)

anyway enough of the war stories.... my first thought is to upgrade the lines to 17mm, but does it actually need to be plumbed back into the intake? may have left that out before but figured it would find its own way out.... which it did......
mabey my dipstick is s*** or my blowby is to much..... dunno peeps hit me with some ideas...

how much blowby is too much?

Yeh you need the same outlet as the intake as it will be building up to much pressure I have a custom catch can on my 12ht with the same size hoses that were going to the intake and have had no problems.

Good luck mark

ok so you plumbed it back into the intake, I was trying to avoid it if possible but if I can't get away with it well so be it.
I'm going to have to bore out the can to take bigger fittings, I'll take some pics, I meant to take some as I was going fitting the parts but I got carried away, you guys know know what I mean :)

Hey guys, I've been thinking about a catch can, like people have on other turbo vehicles, any chance you guys could put up some photos of your cans:clap:

Some pics of my modified catch can, I made a new top plate with bigger fittings (brazed some 3/4 copper pipe) will have it all plumbed up when I get some heater hose Monday

Nice pics above, but I'd like to add, can you add pics with this catch can installed.

yeah i will post fitted finished pics after i get some hose, also forgot to mention i replaced the wastegate spring with the 1.7 bar one, it holds 20psi now
plus i fabbed up a full 3" exhaust, no muffler, have not tweaked the fuel up again yet as my battery is dead after sitting for 6 weeks...... exhaust sounds really good

Let us hear the sound and please tell me what for do you need a oil catch can?

I would be a little concerned about venting that catch tank back into the engine, that steel wool brakes down in time and small particles of steel are going to end up on your oil. I have shaken that stuff over a newspaper and seen small particles fall out, there must be other product you can use?

The oil catch can is to capture the oily gases that come out of the positive crankcase ventilation, the hose I'm pointing to is connected to the intake and the rocker cover.
The intake vacuum draws the gases out of the engine, while this is a good thing the by product is an accumulation of oil in the turbo intake, depending on your engine condition (piston ring blow by) this could be minor or severe.
The catch can simply goes inline on that hose, and tried to "catch" the oil vapour and stop it progressing to the turbo intake.
I've got my battery on charge and will take a little clip when I've got it going

Well to be fair I was practically blocking the rocker breather and the dipstick has no grip, like chucking a hot dog down a hallway :) need a new one with a new seal.
When I ran it yesterday holding 20psi it was fine, that's with the STD pcv pipe connected

Hey mate

Can you put some pics up of your catch can and hoses

Thanks

Catch can Fitted.
back hose is straight, front hose is off a Hyundai (rubbish tip custom)

the can is just hanging there resting on ac hoses, it's not going anywhere, I'll just cable tie it in place, too much mucking about for the bracket (read: I'm too lazy to fit it properly...)
:)

Thanks for the write up and pics of the catch can. I want to stop the oil flow in to the intake on my 12HT and this makes it easy now
that I understand what I need. Any thoughts on just using a paper filter to fit the can instead of the steel wool? I can see the worry of
metal bits rusty steel wool getting blown into the intake??
