You should warn us before showing us brake cylinders and shoes like that…
We'll see how much of this I can get through this week.

I've never touched the rear wheel bearings, but seemed like I should have a look after a decade and 100k + kms

Bought the kit 8 years ago I think 🤣

One side almost done. Gawd I hate drum brakes. Those ****ing springs....🤬

Goofy lookin thing

It could have triggered some PSD. I hate drum brakes and I especially hate auto adjusters.

I just wish there were better parking brake options. I’ve ordered parts to rebuild the drum parking brake… it hasn’t worked in 25 years. With a replacement drum with a stainless sleeve for the oil seal and new brake shoes… it may actually work again… once the mule train arrives from 1/2 way around the globe. They should be here any month now.

Recently bought a pair of special brake spring pliers, pretty handy...
I used to have a special tool for those retainer springs that grab onto the little pins through the backing plates. Kind of a nut driver looking thing.

Naturally, couldn't find it. Worst thing was the pins that came in the spring kit were shorter. ****ing near impossible to install,,,:bang:

🤮

Only broke one fastener. I guess that's a win. Meh.

I'll have to have a serious dig to see if I have anything that small. Or I'll just tap it out for something a bit better than tiny little Phillips.🙄

I'll just bolt down a cover plate over the spot. That bitchin brown shag carpet will hide it all🤣

It is in fact possible to change the pickup this way, but you'll spend a significant amount of time convinced it is not, and cursing the life choices that lead you to this moment.

Does it still beat dropping the tank?

Yeah probably, but it's closer than you'd think.

I'll button it up tomorrow. Chase the fuel line and make sure I got them the right way around.

Good enough for this scabby old bitch. Not sure how many more years I'll be motivated to keep it going. One of these days the rust is gonna get s***tier to deal with.

Definitely was needed. Old ones snapped when I moved them slightly so they were close.

Trying something to see whether it's useful or annoying. ( also how I categorize coworkers)

Spent a few minutes making this yesterday. It's just on with sticky velcro, so I can remove and throw it in the bin without any fuss if it sucks haha

Little roadtrip with swmbo, so more places to put crap are usually needed...

Bear in mind, the permanent version would be black to be more discreet and maybe aluminium. Or at least wrapped with tolex.

Didn't have time to paint this before we head out today, bit hippy dippy looking as is, but whatever.

Dash has a very slight crown to it, so I'd probably put the good one on with a couple bolts to pull it into shape.

My dash pad is also cracked and s***ty, so if this was black and looked decent it'd get 2 birds stoned I think.
Meh. We'll see.

I can see how that could be handy… throw in some spalted maple, maple trim, stain, and clear coat.

Reminiscent of an old British sports car… 🤷‍♂️

Nah, it'll be black in some way. It stands out too much as is. Might make it a bit skinnier too.

I have a bunch of tolex for covering guitar amps, that'd make it look more like a normal dash. Probably would bubble in the sun tho. Maybe plastic...I think I have something that'd work.

That's another day problem tho.

Just going to ucluelet for a few days, initially the plan was to take the cruiser because it's better in the snow and I'd rather slide it into a tree than Mel's car.

Now it's more like we're taking the cruiser because it's better in foot deep standing water and driving over tree branches 🤣🤣

Bring a Pulaski and/or a chainsaw.

I’ve had a Pulaski in my 40 since ‘92. Western Tool and Equipment sold them for $15 each back then. I bought a bunch at the time. When my wood handle got too beat up I got a F/Glass handled one, and don’t think I’ve used it since.

They brought them in mostly for the Forrest Service and sold them a thousands at a time. Fighting Fires they were treated as disposable. If they got too dull or beat up, they’d grab a new one. In my co-op position for BC FS, each truck would have 3-4 in the toolbox, and a couple shovels. And that was in a managers truck… not part of the fire crew.

Mine still has a measurable layer of summer flower dust on my dash that protects it from the harmful rays of the sun. (No cracking yet!)

Just thinking about all that dust building up in a carpet type material.. Some hard loud rattly type material where everything slides to one side every corner wouldn’t be great either.

But a combo would! Like an epoxy or painted black frame with a removable carpet or rubber type material liner in the bottom?

Have a good trip. I'm a big fan of that rubber bottomed carpet, used to have it on top of the aluminum medical box/console
in the 60 so the dogs wouldn't slide off. If you had something like that under it to hold position. Make it removable so only
use it on trips, good idea I like it.

Yeah no carpet for sure, but I'm thinking a rubber liner. Mouse pad kinda s***.

With slots so you can wipe it out.

Can already see it's gonna be useful. I love the dash box I made for the 40.

Might put two of those dividers on the good one when I get to that point. In a perfect world, just adding catchrails to the dash would be great, but mine is s***ty. Especially around the speaker hole.

... and a flower vase, reminiscent of the 'new' VW Beetle. Everyone needs that.

Long time ago a buddy and I were driving across Nanaimo in his GTI, and all the engine lights came on. We were right near the VW dealer so in it went and they gave us a new beetle as a loaner.

It was so embarrassing.

Sitting at the lights," you know, all these people looking at us think we're a handsome gay couple "

I put the flower thing in the glovebox. 🤣
