Where are the pistons from and are the upgraded (alfin) ones with much stronger lands?

Got them from a guy in the classifieds, and yep they have the inserts. Can you even get ones without the inserts anymore?

Doing the main bearings now will be 100x easier than tearing into it later to do them.

Kinda where I'm leaning. I just need to poke around for an engine stand that'll hold a heavy old lump like this.

Bearings are pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things.

My intention had been to pull it apart and inspect, then decide on whether to get a full rebuild kit from aus...

Picked up a full Toyota gasket set from partsouq, in case that was as far as I needed to go...and then stumbled onto a good deal on a set of pistons in the classifieds.

At which point the ball was starting to roll whether I wanted it to or not



Pretty much decided to go in.

Perversely, I'm kinda looking forward to it.

There was a bit of a delay because my homemade 46mm socket didn't cut it, had to pick a real one up on monday.


Funny how crooked it sits in the bay.

You'd think a mount was in backwards or something, but that seems to be how it is.

Anyways, I got the greasy bastard out. Think I broke a sweat today.

Bit of a pain in the ass grabbing onto one of these when the head is off. There's a spot to bolt on one of the lift points up front, but ****all out back. Had to put those braces back on and grab onto them.

Picked up a stand, which claims to be good for 1500lbs but I can't see that flying.

Doubt this weighs much more than a third of that and it's already bouncy.

Hence the hook on the front.

Now to make it somewhat less greasy.

It'll look better when the carpet matches the drapes

Scrubby brush, spray bottle of degreaser cut with hot water and most importantly....cold beer for the scrubber.

The ford blue is a bit too dark, but I have very few ****s to spare for paint at the best of times.


Note to self...empty oil filter before flipping it over

It's kinda weird. I don't remember seeing any other toyota diesels that they painted the blocks on?

My 3b's were all just bare cast as near as I could tell.


Remembering when engines got painted at the boat yard...it was assemble completely, then hose the bejesus out of them with paint.

None of this fancy pants masking tape crap...maybe a dab of grease on something you didn't want paint to stick to

Clean enough now that I won't stick to it.

Also looking forward to getting the front section of the frame all wire wheeled and painted before the lump goes back in.

It's kinda s***ty looking and access sucks with an engine in the way.

Princess auto have their blasting cabinet on sale...kinda tempted for all the brackets and stuff, but not sure I want the headache of making it happen.

I've been reading about piston protrusion with the replacement pistons, some are apparently too tall and can cause some seriously bad s*** if it isn't corrected.



The factory number isn't easy to find, not published in manuals I guess? Anyways, reading online some say it's .53 to .68mm and I've also seen .51-.64mm, so I figured I'd measure the ones it had in it and go from there.

I popped the rings off one of the originals, and put it back in with the old bearing and measured, and I got somewhere around .65 to .7mm. My measuring method wasn't perfect because there's some wiggle to the pistons without rings in them, but measuring both the same way, got me similar numbers I think.

Tried a new one and got close to the same, around .68mm. This is with the old bearings, and without the bottom caps torqued on, so when that happens the number might change. I'll certainly be checking that before I button anything up and making sure with a more reliable measuring method, but some have said their new pistons stuck up almost 1mm, so at least I know this isn't that, and I suspect they're fine.

Now to have a look at the lifters.

First wee issue.

Looks like the bearings 4wheel auto sent me aren't the right ones. The little locking tabs are on the wrong sides, they also have an oil hole.

Box does say Taiho 12ht standard but not this 12ht apparently.

Talked to Dan at 4wheelauto and apparently he has never ordered the ones I need in 20 years, so that's something.

Also going to get main bearings and he recommended wrist pin bushings as well.

Nice thing is all these bits and pieces aren't very expensive, and I suspect that even if I HAD bought a full rebuild kit I'd have had an issue.

Not to mention all the kits come with s***tier gaskets than the toyota set I got.

no rush at least. Gives me time to fix other stuff.

Lifters look fine to me at least.

Dan also confirmed my suspicion that doing the cam bearings is a bit of a nightmare, so I'm just going to hope for the best on that score.

This thread is 90% for keeping all this crap straight in my head at this point.

Reassembled the head with the new stem seals and put the valves back in.

Wanted to cut down on the amount of greasy boxes with numbers scribbled on them and,

get that piece of s*** spring compressor out of my life.

Got a big old box of brackets and such to take to work and degrease/descale.


Side two clean. Poor old thing must be feeling kinda naked.

Box and that tote will be going into a dumpster as soon as freaking possible...

Thought about just flogging it and getting a newer truck, but there's nothing I really like.

So if I can spend a couple grand on this old thing and get some more years out of it, great.

It really owes me nothing at this point.

Was thinking of leaving the pump on.

I should probably pull the cam and at least look at the bearings, hoping they're ok but who knows at this point.
Word is it's kindof a bitch to get out.

Been following the instructions, but I need to get the front cover off to see if all the steps are necessary to get the cam.

Phone just gave dire warnings about extreme temperatures in the next few days, so that should be fun.

Haha all good. I really like the engine. Doesn't really drive like an old cruiser

I've thought about downsizing to one cruiser, and if I did that maybe swapping engines and flog this as a bj61 or whatever the hell it'll be.

Probably wouldn't be worth much less. Not soon tho. Couple years maybe.

Ok back at it.

Last week was a bit of a write off. Too hot and we had a tenant to extract who was dug in like an Alabama tick.

Over with now. Not sure if I ever want to deal with a renter again. On the one hand long term is easy, on the other, you get dragged into their bull****, and we are sooooooo done with other people's bull****.

We have a fence, a gate and a moat. Take the hint humans.


Anyways. Back to cruiserland.

I don't understand this things purpose. Stiffening plate. Stiffening what? The giant lump of cast iron block?

If it's for oil circulation, fine, but why call it a stiffening plate? Dunno.

Made a quick and dirty puller to get the pulley off, glad I didn't attempt this in the truck. It fought every mm of the way.

Got the timing cover off. Still debating whether to pull the cam. Sounds like it needs to be pressed out, and it seems to me that makes for a good opportunity to **** up the bearings.

I'll do some more reading on it tonight. Could be I have that wrong.

Fsm is on the work computer too

My feeling with this engine is that the low KMs are accurate, but the reason they're low is because it sat for 6 or 7 years.

When I bought the truck some of the pictures were 7 years old, so I have my suspicions.

This I didn't notice when I had the pan off 5 or 6 years ago. I didn't rotate the crank at the time because I was just replacing a rusty pan.

Suspect that's condensation from the years of sitting.
My guess anyways. Don't see staining anywhere else.

Main bearings I've looked at seem ok tho. Have to wait for the new ones to show up.

Also not sure if the thrust bearings are replaceable without pulling the crank out. Top half might be trapped. More reading required.


Got new ones coming in case mine were pooched, but I suspect they're fine with the low kms. Gave it the prybar wiggle the fsm describes and got the metric equivalent of ****all.

I'll measure more accurately later
