Hi,
I am sharing some modification work, that I am doing on my 1984 HJ 47 pickup.
I modified the HJ 47 chassis to accept the suspension, drive, axels, foundations etc for the HDJ 80 series, engine, transmission etc.
The result is as in the picture. . .

Since the 80 series is 76 inches wide, I had to widen the body of the HJ47 by 11 inches. . I also added two more doors at the back, by reducing the open pick up cabin at the back . .

Please notice the widening of the front grill, the windscreen, the bonnet. . .

I modified the interior to accept all electronics, air, heating, dashboard etc of the 80 series cruiser

I added the 1HDT, 4.2 liter Turbo diesel engine. . .

Created a new roof to fit the widened body and to accomodate the 80 series sunroof . .

Work is in progress. . . I have added two smoke stacks and a snorkel

The interior is now being built and the vehicle will go for painting . . I expect it to be ready in a couple of months . .

Please give your feed back so far . .

I used the floor of the 80 series. . the advantage was that everything fits in its place . . . It was a headache accommodating 80 series air and dash board in the 40 series I had to make modifications to the body . . plz see attached image

Wow nice work there, super cool project

What an epic amount of work that would take. I'm sure it will be awesome when done!

You are doing exactly what I did not have the guts to do. Maybe next time. Don't leave us hanging. We wanna see more pictures.

I started with the frame. the first task was to compare the HJ47 frame to the 80 series . .
The HJ47 frame

The 80 Series frame

The I altered my HJ47 frame to match as closely to the 80 series frame as possible;
then i started fitting the 80 series stuff to the HJ47 frame

after finishing the frame suspension mountings etc. I decided to use the 80 series floor on the frame so that it would sit on the original mountings.

I will post new fotos in a week about the current stage of the project . .

i like it a lot
except the stacks in the back

i would like to know more about the ragtop 40 in the back ground of the sunroof pic

Wow Monumental build in the dirt and utilizing some great turn buckles to hold things together takes some ingenuity as well.
Good Job!

Interesting build - very ambitious and creatively executed.

My question for you at this point relates to the first decision you made with the frame. Why did you decide to modify the 47's frame with the 80's components and then do all the sheet metal mods, instead of retaining the 80 frame and floorpan and modifying only the 47's sheet metal? I'm trying to understand this decision as it seems like you are taking the hard road and I'm not clear on what you gained by that. You've already done some extensive body modifications, and it seems to me that it would have been a more straightforward exercise to keep the 80 frame instead of also doing such extensive changes to the 47's frame. Was the 80's frame unusable otherwise? I'm sure you thought about this decision a lot and I'm interested to learn about the reasons behind your choice.

The reason I cudnt change the frame is legal issues. The vehicle is legally identified by the chassis number engraved on the frame. If i had changed the frame, i would have had to re-register the vehicle, find customs documents for the frame etc.. so i chose a really unusable 80 series frame and used the parts.
