change the oil yourself so you're sure that they have not:
- used ATF
- used gear oil
- used PS fluid
- used PB fluid
- forgot to change the filter-
- forgot to replace the drain plug
- forgot to put the drain plug gasket on
- forgot to put the cap on
- forgot to put the dipstick back on
- forgot to put oil in
- etc
- etc
:D

your knuckle leak...........oh, sorry that was eric. ::)

>> - forgot to put the cap on <<

Funny (or not so funny) story. My wife's new car comes with free oil changes at the Nissan dealer. She takes it in regularly. I picked it up for her one day and the service manager proceeds to read me the riot act about the oil cap being left laying in the engine bay and how we could have blown an engine and so on. I let him finish then politely informed him that they were the only mechanics that had changed the oil and, in fact, the hood had never been opened by anyone except them.

He abruptly ended the conversation.

Eric makes a good point and, at the very least, you should open the hood, check the oil level, and check for leaks before you drive it. They mess up every day.

Check for proper torque on your lug nuts and air pressure in the tires. Oh yea, bring plenty of money or credit card for gas - you're going to need it.

Replace the belts and keep the used ones as spares. Check all the fluids, and change the oil/filter yourself.

The wifey used to work at Walmart. I'll never get my oil changed there again, EVER.

When backed up they would routinely pull the car in, vaccum it out, then pull it out and bill the customer for an oil change. Most people never noticed the difference. Walmart even gave them a shiney new oil change reminder sticker on the window.

More than once they drained the oil, then didn't fill it back up.

Most common mistake was under filling the oil volume though.

1,000 miles is nothing. It's a frickin land cruiser. Change the oil if it's due, fill up with fuel and go. You'll likely be stopping every 5 miles to urinate anyway since that's what all women do.

....Thanx guys . I'll let 'em do it as sceduled , but check things afterwards . One time the dealer forgot to tighten the drain plug !! If management at worked hadn't bitched after I had my vehicle in one of the bases .. claiming it left a small slick , I would never have noticed .. uggh !

Yeah 1000 miles isn't much . I get up at 3 AM , on the road by 4 .. and drive straight thru in one shot .. stopping only for gas ... 6 times I think . Get in by 8 or 9 PM ... And who needs to stop to piss , I'll just whip a Texas catheter on and hang that out the window :flipoff2:

Let's see now, (moisten end of pencil with tongue):
1,000 miles divided by 13 mpg or so, that's about 77 gallons of gas at, say, the bargain price of $2.10 per and you're looking at a gas bill of $162. Was that one-way? or round tripper?

How much would it cost to fly?

Hi Tyler,
I make several 1400 mile trips from Chicago to the Fla. Keys a few times and this is what I do. Change engine oil and filter, drain and refill trans, check coolant, ps, air filter, brake fluid, belts, hoses, and air in tires. I also take a small tool set and extra fluids. Oh and check the air in the spare tire too. Bob

Mann, you all take some extensive preparations. I just took a 1200 mile round trip 2 weekends ago. This was my prep:

1) Checked Tires,
2) Checked Oil (Still have 1500 miles to go before change, thanks Mobil 1).
3) Took out credit card, bent over and filled the tank.
4) Called American Express for a large credit increase so I could fill the tank a few more times.
4) Piled Wife, Baby,100 pound german shepard, and luggage in the Cruiser,
5) Set Cruise control at 82 and let her rip.

At least for all the gas I bought, I got this cool picture.

Now that is a cool pic!

Hmm,

Did you go through New Orleans? (Great beads) ;)

Nope, one of the girls that worked there gave them to him. He is lucky that he is much better looking than his dad.

I just did 2700 to Cruise Moab and back. Basically checked all fluids and tire pressure. Changed all 3 belts. Changed diff and transfer lube, greased driveshafts, then bought a great deal of gasoline. 1000 miles-that's nothing.

Cary - be sure and get this before you do any long distance :D

If anyone has been paying attention to my sig line they might have bnotice I quite often do 1000 mile weeks for work. It's like getting the groceries now. I don't check anything just jump in and drive. My confidence level in the vehicle is quite high .

Rick, who just drive home from Maryland today.
