My parents are looking at buying a 30-35' camper trailer and doing the US retirement tour.

They've been told that ideally they need a 3/4 ton diesel truck. My question is if a LC/LX could do the job?

T's website lists the LC towing capacity at 6500 lbs.

I think you will get a better answers from a 25' to 35' camper trailer forum than IH8MUD forum.

They may not answer directly about UZJ but a solution such as weight distrubeted kits and other towing items for medium size SUV such as Explorer, Durango and Blazer (far more common out in the street) to handle X-large trailer. UZJ already have a transmission cooler so that's a plus.

With my 2000 TLC, I did hauled a scissor lift w/ self braking trailer, a combo of 6000lbs, that's the max for me even at 20 MPH.

Good Luck,

I believe they need a heavy duty truck. I think the new Chevy 1500 or new Tundra fitted with the large gasoline V8's would work too, as the ratings are pretty high.

For thousands of miles of heavy towing, I'd point them towards a big diesel PU.

X2 here. I tow my 21' up to the Sierra's with the LC but it only has a 4000 GVW.
30' to 35' extended trek models are going to tipping the scales at 8500 or better. I just looked at the new 5.7 Tundra, and it's nice. But diesel torque will be needed over the Rockies, Sierra's, and even the flats of the Midwest.

while a 100 could probably struggle to do it, a truck geared towards heavy towing would probably be a better option. That new tundra looks mighty nice...

I've owned a Ford diesel excursion, a Ford diesel crew cab, and now drive a 2000LC. I would definitely recommend a diesel or heavy duty truck for towing their trailer. My diesels would tow my 6000lb boat up steep grades without breathing hard. My 1500 gas chevy suburban would struggle with the same load.

Mike.

ok, thanks guys.

I agree with the heavier truck. I have pulled a 28' 12,000 trailer all over between Arizona and Alabama with a 3/4 ton power stroke. A LC would be loaded with a 30 to 35' travel trailer for extended towing cross-country. Another option would be to get a motor home with a diesel power plant and pull a LC/LX behind it.

I've towed w/ my 100 series...18ft flatbed trailer w/ my buggy...total weight, 5,500lbs. In my estimation, that was pushing it. A 35ft travel trailer???...How long to you want to see your folks last?? That would be EXTREMELY dangerous in my opinion. ...you need the stability of the wheelbase and the big braking power offered by a 3/4 ton truck....Nevermind the power aspect

well if there's a large inheritance, maybe he doesn't want to see them make it past the road-tripping, and should recommend to them they pull the trailer with a Rav4.

LOL justkiddin adam, tell them to get a F-650...

Or get a Kenworth.

They'd have much less stress and probably better gas mileage with a HD diesel, whether it be a Ford, Chevy or Dodge. They're all good, just a matter of opinion and preference.

Although they'd definitely be the envy of the campground in an LX or LC.
Hmm, it might also make them targets for burglary. Yeah, just steer them towards a Dodge with a Himmee.

Read the post by "anonymous" in this thread. It is about a dodge. Sounds like a nightmare.

just curious, what do yo have them looking at?
I think the Tundra is a little sparten if they are considering an LC, but from what I have heard in the farm country of southern MO, Diesel's are the way to go for hauling. Most of the guys down there have a 2500 series duramax diesel. I am not sure what I would do, but I would start by asking how rich farmers tow thier toys around. I am sure they can get more information from a rancher mag then us? JMO
