I have an extra tailgate sitting in my garage, and Im pretty close to you. PM me if interested.

Would like to see pics of the internal frame of the rear hatch of the 100. I would be interested in this but am not sure was structural issues you may run into cutting that amount of sheet metal and possible internal supports away. May not be an issue at all but would love to see what it looks like opened up. Not really wanting to be the guinea pig and cut up my rear hatch.

This is what mine looks like inside after it was cut, the 80 had two support in the middle but with the lid the way it is, it is not any weaker.
It can handle my 230# friend sitting and standing on it with zero drama. The same guy played with the wagon gear lid reported it has much more flex on the lid when you put weight on it. In fact, I used the original tailgate as support for the lid when closed, it's light weight, simple and very effective.

I wonder if the 100 internal structure is just like the 80 series? Has anyone opened up the 100 rear hatch to find out?

Where is the support member in the hatch located? Also, what are those two black hoses in the hatch?

I know this is generalized to the 100 series, but the late model LX 470s have a bit more going on in there with the lighted rear license plate panel. All $400 or so of it. Structure the same, but more wires and mounting points.

I'm interested. Only concerns are rattles and strength. I like to sit, stand, and cook on the tailgate. $400-600 not an issue.

I'm working on that, new hardware and stuff cost a little more money. The 80 series is $450 so you guys have a ballpark.
If I get a good number of pre-orders, then I can start production after I finish the prototype.
Nope, I'm out, too rich for my blood given what it does.

I'd imagine that a DIY version could be done for pretty cheap. Could easily re-use the current carpet/hardboard cover, with a few key cuts. Some velcro. And a cloth type hinge. Perhaps even 2 'bins' so no need to cut the supports. It's been on my project list but haven't gotten around to it.

Why not make the whole panel a door instead of putting a door in a panel?
This way the whole panel is supported all the way around.
Going to include a cardboard template for cutting out the tailgate.
I will post pics when mine is done, but made out of Aluminum Diamond plate and used the carpet as a template.

Could even screw and glue the carpet to the top then and it would look totally covert.

Having contemplated this before, I think I would give you some advice.

1-stay under $500 before options .
2- improve the surface texture of the tailgate and be prepared for the people that like to do things like cut catfish on their tailgate.
3-extend the storage capacity BEYOND the shape of the tailgate. Otherwise, the gain is minimal, IMO. Not worth the expenditure.

I considered this but the value of what I would store(shotgun) isn't well served by cutting into good metal. You'd have to improve storage area and improve upon the worn carpet for this to be worth cutting into a tailgate. I think you would need to use carbon fiber materials to some degree.
