@ffpmsam I'm drawing out my cutsheets and I'm curious what the widest part of your wings are? Trying to squeeze these pieces in! They don't look any taller than your drill. Also, how did you go about getting such an exact fit of the wings on the sides of the car? Thanks in advance.

I will measure for you as soon as I get the chance. As far as fitment, I made a cutout with cardboard. That will get you somewhat close then you can transfer that cardboard to wood. I think I transferred it first to a piece of scrap wood and then to my final piece.

When it’s transferred to wood, I would just mark it with my pencil and then used a stationary belt sander to “cut in” the shape I needed. The belt sander worked great if you need an excuse to buy a new tool

Awesome, I'd appreciate the measurements. Thanks for the tips.

Wood, wood, wood. Everybody makes them out of wood.

I really liked this design, except the stupid front lid. Product page

Also took inspiration from 80 Series 8020 Cruiser Kitchen - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/80-series-8020-cruiser-kitchen.1225307/ specifically the aluminium kitchen part.

Here is my metal take on the drawers. Still a work in progress on the design. There should be one more extension out of the extended portion and the square tower is a placeholder, until I figure out the layout in that portion. The sides would be some kind of plastic, maybe acrylic glass. Calculated total weight is about 85kg, ~187lb

I already did the steel frame with a test fit with a set of sliders

Next is to mount the slides and bend the aluminium sheets for the drawers.

If I build another set they’ll be made of aluminum. I’m teaching myself how to TIG weld to be able to do more aluminum. Steel is an easy choice but if I can eliminate the rust issue I will.

Love what you have going on here.

Just curious how the drawers and monstaliner has held up over the years. Pics? Thanks!
Drawers and monstaliner are doing well. I threw a thick mat on top and cut it to fit, as I constantly throw things in and out of there and if you catch something sharp it can get scratched up, just to protect the aesthetics of it. Aside from that the monstaliner is bomber. Drawers are great, if I was redoing the project I would have made the drawers the entire length of the back. Might still make the change. The hatch is almost never utilized and not super easy to get to. I’ll see if I can get some pics posted up, honestly it still looks brand new

I did it. No welding, just rivets. I did some TIG and I am getting better at it, but for drawers it is definitely an overkill

Curious if that will start to rattle over the years. I never really considered rivets viable because they tend to relax slightly over time and metal on metal makes a lot of noise if allowed to move. But.... perhaps with a very good rivet it would stay good and tight. Great DIY approach regardless. That would be a 400# DIY wood setup, I bet.

Tell that to the aerospace industry. So many rivets. Gotta size them right but that’s not too hard. Definitely a good option!

I used aluminium sheets (5154 IIRC) and generic aluminium rivets from a hardware store. The complete setup weights about 190lb.
They have held up great so far, 2 years and 57k km later. Not a single issue and they have seen A LOT. If they start to get loose I guess I could drill them out and re-rivet them. Looks like they would be good for at least 3 years, maybe more, which I am fine with.
The sliders are on the cheaper end (still cost me like $500 for the full set for all drawers!) and the ball bearings somewhat rattle when the drawers are empty. After I put some stuff inside they are quiet.
If I am to do that again i will upgrade the sliders, but won't change much else. Maybe not put the foldable sink. We have used that maybe three times over many months of living off the truck.

Some great ideas and work. Anyone got any bright ideas on how to utilise the space where the 2nd row seats are - I’ve removed mine, solo traveller so no need for them, but I’m very undecided on how best to utilise the space. Water tanks sits in the footwell with the air compressor but currently the rest of the space is void….

If I didn’t have the second row my top recommendation would be to lower the overall drawer height. Having the drawer high enough to work with the second row really limits head room. Makes it tough for getting dressed or hanging out inside during a rain storm.

Ideas for a safe for passport, cash, cards etc, plus lift-lid locker with clothing bags that you can see in and zip closed so it's all accessible but also out the way and fairly dust-proof. Tool storage too, low down and between the axles, although not much in there really..., so lots to think over. And yes, everything stays low and neat. I don't need a sleeping space, got a great roof-rent I'd be hard-pressed to dump.. (bundu-top). Place to store bulky, seldom used stuff like awning walls etc.
