Check out Stokes Tire on Santa Monica Blvd and 11th, I think. He's got a great shop and would most definitely have the right equipment.

Back in the 90's a group if used to hit Anzo Borrego on a regular basis. The granite staircase, ocotillo wells, etc. That was about it.

When you add up the balances, thats like two new BFG's. I'm sticking with initial suggestion that I see your mechanic also proposed: Its the tires.

Put the ProComps on Craigslist, and get yourself a nice set of BFG's.

Anyone want to bet a local 6 pack on it at next year's 100's in the hills?

Yeah, you're not kidding. Don't even add up the u joints and cvs. Puke...

One more try and then it's off to replacements.

I just can't stand driving this thing with the shake and that's not what I bought it for. If only I was not in LA...

Your caster is way low. Nervous/hyper sensitive steering? Assuming your alignment guy knows his stuff then you either need to lower the front suspension height (t-bar adjust) or consider aftermarket front upper control arms with built in caster correction; check out the new SPC arms from Slee.

FYI: 21" hub center to fender lip is at the top of what our IFS can deal with without handling/suspension compromise. Since t-bar adjust is so cheap and easy...try lowering to 20-20.5" for grins.

My money is on the tires for vibe culprit...or a bent wheel.

PavieSD. Where in San Diego do you go? SD Trux?

I've heard good things about SD Trux for general work, but I have no idea if they have a road force machine. I recall there being a place in Mira Mesa that had one, but never ended up trying it out. As far as using SD Trux for work, I have done all my own work on the truck so far so no personal experience to offer there.

Good deal. Ask if there are any coupons. They normally charge $85 but said they found a coupon that applied and only charged me $65. I think Alberto is the guy I normally deal with there. They're pretty good about figuring out the right tire pressure corrected for the new size.

Ok, another update -

I think Stokes did it. I had all 5 wheels balanced and yet another alignment done. Last night was the first time I could get up to 68 mph on the highway (LA - sheesh) and I did NOT detect the shake. I even had a spurt up to 75mph and didn't feel anything like before.

I spoke to the tech at Stokes and they said when they road-forced all the tires they took weight off two and re-balanced them, the third was just a minor adjustment and the fourth was a couple points better than their typical best tolerance. The fifth was just the spare. :) They only charged me for 2 plus another alignment. I never mentioned this but the truck always had a really slight pull to the left even after two other alignments and that's gone as well.

I'll want to do a longer road trip on non-chopped-up LA highways but I think Stokes might have done it. I'm already so much happier! Now if I could only get my money back from the U-Joints... Oh well, water under the snorkel. :)

Thanks to everyone for all the advice and guidance. Even if off the mark it gave me solid information when talking to techs.

So lesson learned - go to Stokes and road-force balancing is your friend!

oh and a seperate data point - I ran my tires at 50lbs to see if it effected by mpg - no change. So I'm back to 37lbs and it's a nice ride.

From reading this thread sounded like you had some broken belts in the tires. If new take back to tire store and have them replace the tires that don't balance up. Weird that you had so many people that could not get your truck aligned and tires balanced. I had Slee off-road do my OME with alignment drove over 1000 miles each way to have mine done by the best. It was worth it mine drives better then a new LX, hope you get yours figured out and welcome to Mud.

Anyone have a favorite oil (synthetic vs. normal) for 100 series with 93k miles? Also, frequency for oil changes? I can read the manual but what's good policy on these babies

Usually Valvoline full synthetic 5w-30 at 9k (or 1 year) intervals with Blackstone analysis. Results always come back excellent. 3-5k on a synthetic, unless you're driving it hard in severe conditions, is too soon.
