OK, now we are getting to the bottom of some of your "perceived" improvement.

Firsty, you limited the travel of your original OME shock by 2" by adding a bump stop spacer, so by adding a 2.6" longer shock, you got back your standard amount of travel, + .6 of an inch, so over all you have gained half an inch of travel over what your last shocks had before the bump stop spacer, its just working 2" lower compressed, and extended, but overall the same amount of travel [within 1/2"].

This is where data tells me what we use has the same travel within 20mm [3/4"] without the bump stop spacer.

Thanks for clearing that up.

DO YOU NOT GET IT? :)

You have to lower bump stops when running L-shocks on an 80-SERIES TOO!
People do this and the improvements after on their 80's is a big plus, especially with large tires like 35's!

So I've done the same to my 100, though you can't believe it helps a 100, just an 80? Or do you just believe L-shocks don't help an 80 either?

John,

Go ahead and post that shot. I did not use that one in the article...

Should be hitting the shelves with the March issue. Look for loads of Toyota and adventure content in Off-Road Magazine now.

I guess the average reader has grown tired of the "rock buggy" phase, and want to read about real trucks on real trails. That is good for all of us :)

OK Scott. Will do.

Hey John, Do you think I still have to go a full 2" drop on the bump-stops with my 33`s in order to slap these 74L`s on, or could I get by with an inch or so and still keep those shocks from bottoming out ?..

You need the 2-inches just like an 80 does. We meaured and Slee was right, the bumpstops themselves compress some so mearuement was important. You'll not believe the improvement. One exampl is posted above. CLICK THE LINK. WHTACHA THINK?

oops..Is this the end of the treads ?...

Oh, dont worry John..I am ALREADY a believer !!!

Can we assume that future issues will be less buggy and more real-truck-real-trails? Nothing wrong with rock buggies...but...after a while they all just seem to blend together...

Absolutely. Off-Road will now be split about even on trail vehicles and adventure articles and desert race/ pre-runner and race coverage.

There will even be a good dose of expedition travel, including coverage of my trips to Mojave, Baja, El Camino Del Diablo, etc.

The same holds true for 4WD Toyota Owner. Lots of trail coverage, expedition prepared vehicles, trail equipment reviews, etc. I did an article on a UZJ100 two issues ago, and we plan on having loads of 80's in there (a very involved group in the Land Cruiser demographic). Look for a three part series on my trans-peninsular trek down to Baja.

Overall, rock buggy interest has wained in the last year. Not because they are not cool, but because they do not apply to 99% of off-highway drivers. Very few enthusiasts can afford to build a one-off rock buggy and repair it, then buy the full size truck to pull it with, etc. You will see rock buggies become a motorsport. Rock Buggies (non-street legal vehicles) on real-world (public land) trails is actually bad for our hobby with regards to access.

Doug,

I also want to mention that you, and your NorCal contingent has done a lot for promoting overland and expedition interest. You guys have done some VERY cool stuff the last few years. I enjoy following your adventures

Scott,

When will you join us?

Alvaro

Scott,
On behalf of the NorCal 80s guys, thank you very much. I can't take credit for anything except for being one of the more "vocal" members of our group. :D

IMHO, much of the trip planning and scheduling credit should go to CruiserDrew and alvarorb -- but others chime in frequently with ideas for something fun. It's a great group and we try to have as much fun as we can.

Please do feel free to join us on our trips if you can find the time.

I think you should change your screen name to "chubby checker" mr shotts,..... the way you try and twist things around....

I never mentioned anything about 80's, i simply explained how .6" travel seemes to have made a world of difference in your mind, when you put the shocks on.

regardless of the extra length, in any thread you like, you have lost 1" of that extra travel with the bump stop spacer, leaving .6" extra travel from the longer shock, downward......

And we dont run bump stop spacers for 35's here....

So is anyone interested in my N74-L shocks from my 80? :hillbilly

these 100-threads are so much more entertaining....
