Thought some of the more hardcore people might enjoy this. I had 5" with 38's but it rubbed my rocksliders/rollcage mount. I decided to go bigger to try and get more clearance. I cut off the coil buckets and turned them upside down and mounted them even with the bottom of the frame plus added a gusset. I also slotted the lower control arm mounts and welded some very thick washers over the holes once i pushed them all the way up. Not enough caster, but better than it was. Still need to make shock mounts and an adjustable track bar. All work seems to be for nothing because i still don't have much clearance. Only about 6 hours wasted. This is offroad only, not driven on street, 4:88 gears, Randy's Titan locker up front, welded rear. Has OME 2" springs front and rear, 850 and 863. $2500 in it with the tires, gears, locker, and cage material.

bracket pics

pics of the frame and brackets. Tried to add more pics but it wont let me. Do i have to delete pics before i can add more?

thanks, thats what i needed to know. Does'nt seem to be much interest though. Alot of people here drive their 80, most don't abuse or butcher. Too bad.

I wouldn't say "too bad". Whatever floats your boat is good, whether it is stock, mild, or wild, IMHO.

There is a hardcore section, I think this would qualify, and maybe garner more interest.

Thanks, that looks more like my section. The control arms and tie rod never touch, they are just a little closer with the caster adjustment i made.

Sorry I was not implying they were touching, my post was for the suggestion of the cut and turn.

Will you need to addressing the relay rod angle?

We need to see more pictures.:D

What is interesting about your post is that guys like me are running 37's cleanly on a 3.5" lit, and you are going so high to try and fit 38's.

First order of business would seem to be balancing your suspension travel so you don't have so much up travel, particularly for a crawler. I'd also be looking at a revised suspension design as I think your suspension dynamics are going to be pretty out of balance.

I'm honestly not so sure that this post is 'hardcore' vs. '80 forum' in terms of where it belongs as much as what you are doing doesn't seem to have a coherent goal, at least what you've expressed here.

If you were just trying to make the tires fit, 5" of lift was certainly already in the ball park to design the required suspension travel, including limiting the up travel to stop excessive body contact.

You'll probably get more feedback if you can explain your overall goals, otherwise it's more of a  effect to see what happens when you try to wheel this thing.

Good luck

As soon as I read the thread title I saw that one coming ;)

Anyway - at that height you might want to look at a arm flip.

I'd like to see more pics, so if you abandon the 80 series forum and run to hardcore (I think you'll find more interest here if you give it a day or so - not everyone emidiately responds) - post the thread link here.

Doesn't look like you've opened up your fenderwells yet. How bout some overall shots and some stuffage shots?

Sliders needs to be modified. It's sticking pass the wheel opening. Control arms needs to be turned or fabricate drop brackets. You need drop brackets for panhards. Check your ds lengths.

Nope, Control arms are in the way of the tie rod or is it the tie rod is in the way of the control arms:D

You can more the tie rod to the front like Jodo did w/ his Y-link coilovers

hats what i did...i had to order mine from japan....130.00 in shipping

Thanks everyone for the input. My problem for the tire clearance is due to the rocksliders/rollcage bar. It had 5" of lift, but looked very tight, plus the wheels stick out. I see most people run stock wheels and narrower tires. The lift is taller than i wanted/needed, but the higher i went the farther from the rock slider the tire got. I don't think it will be enough room still. When i lengthen the track bar i will test and see. I have lots of pictures, need to buy a star. This is not a permanent mod. I want to go wheel with some friends the first weekend of January and need to make the tires fit. I plan on pushing the axle forward 4 to 5 inches and putting Rockwells under it. Already have the axles built and the hydraulic steering, and the pinion brakes. I pulled it out of my jeep when i sold it. I have 2" .250 wall and 1.5" .250 wall tube for the links. Still need about $600 worth of rod ends and bungs to built the bars, not to mention the time to engineer and build a new suspension. Plan to start on this in February. Until then i will try to use the stock components for 1 or 2 more trips.

man, you should have just taken out the sawzall and chopped the fenders up and then you would be fine. if it's a trail only rig, cutting the fenders seems like the easiest, fastest, and cheapest option to run those tires.
