A friend today purchased an HJ 61 last week. After checking the rear diff, he found out the it's a 10:41 ratio diff. I thought these 60's have only come with 9:37 or 10:37? Am i right? Also what are the advantages and disadvantages of 10:41 as compared to the other two?

First we need to translate...
10:41 gears is a ratio of 4.10.
9:37 gears is a ratio of 4.11
10.37 gears is a ratio of 3.70

I don't know if there's an advantange or disadvantage between the 4.10 and 4.11 thirds. Will defer to more knowledgable folks on that one.

The 3.70 gearing will give you lower rpms on the highway, but you're low gearing won't be as low.

Could have been swapped from an 80 series as these did come with 80's. (The rear diff is the same, front is different) Haven't heard from any 80 guys that there is anything wrong with these.

No real disadvantage or gain over a 4.11 and can actually be used with a 4.11 front end. I believe up to a 2% difference is OK, at least according to Yukon gear and other sources.

Did your friend pull the diff and count the gears? Or does the door tag code ID the ratio that came from the factory?

Thanks for the info.
He opened the diff and counted the gears properly.
The problem is that on engaging 4X4 the front wheels sort of drag with the ground. He says the front and rear diffs are different. So means the rear diffs have been changed. Let us also check the front diff. Will reply soon.

I know from experience that early HJ61's in Europe came with the 4,11:1
Later models have 3,70:1

No idea why this is. maybe Toyota figured it needed a different ratio because they moved to 31" tires with the 61.

The difference between 4.11 and 4.10 is negligible and won't cause binding. This same difference can occur with uneven tire wear. .01 difference in the ratio is nothing to worry about.

Dynosoar:zilla:

diddo the above, no issues as long as the rear diff and front diff are the same.
if someone swapped the rear diff to 4.10 and left the front 3.70 then you will have an issue.

i suspect there is more to this story.
