update: so cats and exhaust seem fine. did an exhaust back pressure test. A-okay!

so then that leads me to why its running funny. here's a video not that it will have the answers, but hey it's all i got at this point..
And yeah there's gross stuff in the exhaust. I *think* it just condensation and oil remnants in the pipe still.

Something sounds off to me, but I’m half deaf so be aware. Have you validated and verified timing?
yes. I;m going to pull the valve cover this weekend and triple verify.
also doing a lak down test ...

open to any other thoughts... let me know if you need more info on anything!

Tooth off in the dizzy maybe
seems to run too good for that, Had a tooth off last time I did it years ago... barely ran. where's the bolt in the slot for the distributor supposed to be? about in the middle according to the manual i believe , which weirdly mine was not for the past few years. it was almost all to one side. I think it's on spec now being in the middle.

I’m use to seeing the bolt higher in the slot. Meaning the fizzy rotated CW. I think your a tooth off
Easy peasy to test.. I'll give it a shot.

not sure how that would cause it to smoke after warming up.. ?
Could account for the off running for sure though..

My tooth was off one and it ran just fine, but too advanced. Yours must’ve been too retarded.

Bolt should be pretty close to centred in the slot. I don't think you're a tooth off by that pic.

The FSM has a good pic of how to line up the dizzy gear.

Line up nub on the distributor gear with groove in housing, insert into head so centre of adjustment slot lines up with the bolt hole

Checking with a timing light. If you can't set to proper spec then it's in the wrong position. It's that simple.
yup, timed to 3 perfectly, was at 0 before adjustment. just pulled cap off and rotor is at #1 at TDC on #1 cyl.

The witness mark on the dizzy flange is where I see it. I’d rotate one tooth and bolt it down to that spot and see how it runs.
Landtank, your reputation precedes you, i will keep it in consideration

noted! i'll give it shot and what the results are! easy to do..
thank you gentlemen

k.. y'all are gonna love this! So i'm doing the leak down test. I get to the last cylinder in the firing order, #4 pull the plug, aaaaaannnnnnnndddd....

yeah it's the plug that was in #5 during the "incident" . they are new E3's and turns out it got hit a few times which bent the electrode thingy-ma-bobber into the center electrode, thus no spark.. Runs like a sewing machine now. The dist was spot on in the middle of the slot by the way. if any of yours' is all the way to one side, i might suggest double checking it, or perhaps just a difference in something somewhere.

now to let the exhaust get hot for a while in an attempt to burn the oil oil of the exhaust. I don't think there's as much as I might think

Thanks for all the suggestions and comradery... as luck would have it, it was just an oversight on my part not noticing the plug was fubarred
.

Leak down test was good across the board cold, need to do hot test when it gets pulled back in. Cold it was reading about 7-10% loss across the board. seems okay, The kit instructions said over 20% was bad. I'd say over 10, but hey.

I'd expect some light smoke from burning off of assembly lube until things get good and hot for 15-30 minutes.
If it puked oil into the exhaust as a result of the failure, them oil smoke will be worse for longer IMO
