Took delivery of a 2024 GX550 Overtrail + in eminent pearl white with black interior on 11 November. There is so much 'propaganda' and comparisons to the 200 Series judgment that I thought I'd share what my specific experience is.

DISCLAIMER:
I'm a passionate Land Cruiser enthusiast, and have been for a long time. I've owned or still own an HJ60, an 80, a 100, 3 200's ('13,'15, and '16) and now a GX550. I've also only taken one of them off road (the 80) and I keep a 200 as my all purpose vehicle so that I don't have to drive my 2023 Rivian R1S Quad and my 2024 Lexus GX550 in the rain or bad weather. I am a bit different than most on here in that I am totally OCD in terms of cleanliness and care with all my cars and limit my 80 and 200 to any 'real use.'

After a month, I have apparently had a very different experience than most of the hand wringing 'it ain't a 200' crowd.
I have had NO hood flutter.
I have had NO rattles.
I have had NO brake noises.
I have had NO issues with paint or fit and finish.
I have had NO issues with the seat massagers working. (although I hate the feeling they provide)
I have had NO issues with the level of heat or cool of the HVAC system.
I have had NO complaints about the infotainment screen size and wish all those YouTube reviewers would realize that little 45 degree double arrow box expands the infotainment screen to the full size. It drives me nuts none of them have figured this out.
Other than the fact every single dealer / service experience over-inflates tires and hurts initial ride, I have had NO issues with the ride and how the vehicle takes bumps, etc.

I HAVE had the infotainment screen struggle to decide whether it's day or night, but have not been too bugged by it, and unless a fix comes from Lexus, will probably just keep it set to daytime at some point, since its not an overly bright screen.
I HAVE had too many warnings from traffic warning ahead, from over there, from behind, and anything else that can set a warning beep off. I think they over did it here, but have turned off all that I can.
I HAVE been terribly annoyed by Lexus and all other makers deciding a high gloss infotainment screen finish that shows every single finger touch as a greasy mess is somehow the preferred approach. I have found a good screen cover with more texture and less fingerprints. Its working perfectly.
I HAVE been terribly annoyed, just as I am by the 200's I've had, with the Cool Box. At the expense of usable storage, especially in the GX550, it's ridiculously unusable. I have bought that 3d printed insert off eBay and although I can't get more than keys and wallet to fit in there, its better than dropping them down into the abyss that the Cool Box is.

Overall, having accepted that this is not the replacement for the 200 Series, but is a replacement for the GX460 / Land Cruiser Prado, I am really pleased with it. It's a good vehicle, and I think the interior fit and finish are actually really where I would want them to be for an Overtrail + trim package. I've always thought the LC and LX were a bit too fancy inside for their rhino proof overbuilt vehicle chops (why I love my 92 80, even though everyone else hates the 91-92 model years) and have always felt real leather was a contradiction and a waste inside of at least the LC200. And don't get me started on the 200's fake wood grain high gloss trim.

So it's a good car. It's fun, it turns head, it's a Lexus and I am guessing all these hand wringers are going to be more wrong than right about how long this thing lasts with proper care and maintenance.

It's priced less than a 300/LX and fits that bill, in my mind, perfectly. Having also had as new purchases the Rivian and a 2019 Range Rover Sport, It doesn't seem off price-wise.

It's 2025. The world is a different place, post Covid, post so many other things, so let's stop pretending its 2013, and that we should compare everything as whether it's a 300 series equivalent and enjoy it, already.

You guys are sucking the fun out of it!

I had hood flutter on my 200 that drove me nuts. Doors were kinda tinny/truck cab quality. My 100 is a vault comparatively.

I think everyone’s perception or tolerance of hood flutter is different. If I stare at my 250’s hood yes I can see it move. But under normal driving conditions it’s invisible to me. Color could also effect now noticeable as does speed. I don’t see speeds over 50 unless I leave town on a trip. But even then I never get fixated on my hood.

And I agreed the constant comparison to the 200 is tiring. At this point we could have a separate forum dedicated to all the 200 verse 250 threads.

Everyone has hood flutter. The sheet metal on your hood is no thicker than anyone else’s.
A 30 second google search will show you countless others reporting no flutter whatsoever.

Nothing beats waking up in the morning to distant clairvoyants who know my own experience better than I do. I love the internet.

Maybe Lexus put a fix to it after seeing all the complaints on early production models? Not unheard of. I test drove a 2022 LX600 Premium and clearly saw the flutter after driving back-to-back with my 200. There is also different tolerance/perception depending on each person.

That's been my guess,. I assure you I was totally prepared and terrified at some of the descriptions I've read to experience it. I have watched like a hawk for it and have not had it occur.

I saw someone raise that paint color could minimize or exacerbate things as well. Probably a little something to that for some folks.

Keep in mind I have a Rivian with an aluminum hood, (same color as the GX) so I certainly know what a little hood flutter looks like. You should see the deflection on it when it passes thru the dryers at the car wash!

Good review. Thanks.

And yes, the 92 interior was exceptional for simple comfort and function - perfectly suited to Land Cruiser. (We may be the only two enthusiasts who appreciate this.) I also appreciate how LC250 1958 hews closer to it than anything since.

Good write up. @VWEeplusa Your experience is what I was hoping for when I got mine a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately it wasn’t and for the money I felt like it was unacceptable. Even in 2024 $82k is a decent chunk of change. Thing is they are still in my list of consideration for my next vehicle purchase and while not expecting really a difference at all in then 2025’s I hope they will have at least addressed the fluttering hood. That S drove me nuts.

Also with the base OT now getting memory seats the value move may end up being to go that route rather than the plus because while I enjoyed the massaging seats that Mark Levinson system was trash.

And hopefully one day they put the same AC vents on the top 2nd row like every other models too ! That's just bad 😔.

You're not alone. Through all the 200 vs 250 back and forth, I've often been tempted to post that I owned one of the last "real" U.S. land cruisers - a 94 with cloth interior. :)

.....but yours can't do 0-60 in 20 seconds at 8mpg like my 92! :steer:

I’d say that half the time my memory seats don’t return in my OT+. The lumbar goes flat in 3-5 min and Lexus says it’s my imagination.

The brakes squeal so loud in reverse it could wake the dead. Dealer had my car for 8 days and returned in saying the lumbar is fine and the brake parts are back ordered for 4-6 months.

It is faster than my 200 supercharged and gets better mileage but some days I miss the 200.

Oddly the hvac fan has a mind of its own and blows very weak mostly. This is a minor thing. The inability to turn off cross traffic alerts is very annoying as it beeps if you move forward with any sort of traffic in front of you.

Otherwise it’s been fine and solid. These are just minor annoyances in 2500 miles.

In my experience the hood flutter is more noticeable in cross winds or passing big rigs at highway speeds.

The rest of the review is spot on. Picked up my Overtrail on 11/16.

An addendum to the original post with some added opinions.....

Now that I am about 5-6 washes in, I have to admit this is the most difficult Toyota/Lexus product to wash and dry as any I have had, which also includes multiple 4runners, multiple Tacomas, and the aforementioned list of Land Cruisers. It's not as difficult to get and keep clean as BMW (OEM brake pad funk everywhere) and Land Rover (nooks / crannies / seams / too much gloss) but pretty darn close.

You'd better have an air compressor handy and also plan on a short drive to blow out the remainder, because there are a lot of seams that hold water, especially the mirrors and the rear end. Takes me a pass with the air compressor, then a 5-6 mile drive to get the water to stop running from these areas. Haven't had to do any of this with any Land Cruiser I've had.

I hope this level of water retention in hidden areas doesn't translate to rust down the road, but it sure requires care. I cringe to think about the off-roaders trying to get the muddy water to stop running at an after trail run clean up.
