The story was that the saguaros were shorting out the power lines, causing power failures in the Phoenix area. Keep in mind this is second-hand information from some guy out in the desert. From what little I kow about electricity, it's feasable. I wonder how they protected the machine and personnel who cut the cacti? I can't find anything on the 'net about the project.

... Someone was loping off the tops of the saguaro catci. But just the tops, making them all approx. 12-15 ft high. But there were HUNDREDS of them that had this 'clearancing'. ...

MAN!:mad::skull: I have to have pix of that, it will probably make me ill to see it, that's just stupid!

According to ND topo there is two "heep trails" that turn off of the power line road and go to coves on the east side of Bartlett, did you see or look for them?

Nope.

The Ranger didn't go through Log Corral though.

Lots of fresh sand washed in there, Spike standing in about the same spot as the heep, last year Thanksgiving run.

crossed below dam came out at bartlett

Every time I have talked to Tonto about that crossing they say it has never existed. Years ago I used the one by the camp ground a bunch, it looked well used and probably bladed occasionally. ND topo shows two marked "fords" in that area.

Did you guys happen to notice if there were 2 sets of towers running parralel to each other in the path of destruction? If so, those lines likely belong to APS and I'm sure someone there could answer some of the questions about this. My wife is an Electrical Engineer that works for SRP. She's checking it out on her end today and is going to ask the guys in line maintenance about it.

Yes, two sets of towers/lines.

I'm bigger. :D

Those lines are deffinately APS lines that run to Cholla generating station. Trying to find out more information now...

Somehow I think pictures should be taken to document this before the power company closes FR393...

I would do this myself if I weren't sitting in Louisiana at this time...

I'm going to try to get out there this weekend if I can. Prolly Sunday. I'll let you guys know. An email has been sent to APS... waiting to here back about this practice. These lines run over Easments, does anyone know offhand if this is National Forest? I'm pretty sure that Saguaro cacti are protected in Az and there would have to be some type of special allowance for this to happen. Doing more digging.

Well, considering that you can't even pick up the spines of a dead Saguaro...

And every time there was construction on Beeline, you'd see all the Saguaros that were in the way being removed and placed in 'cactus jail' for the time being, and then replanted or redistributed elsewhere.

I don't know enough about the physiology of the Saguaro, but I bet that just loping off the top of the plant is going to put the plant in serious jeopardy from bacteria or fungi...

Saguaros are protected. Not because they are endangered but bacause the grow so slowly. Apparently that doesn't apply if you are a huge corporation operating out of the public eye.:mad:

well, I still dont like it, but it seems legal

AZDA template 3-915 seems to exempt powerline right of ways form the protection.

3-915. Exemptions
A. This chapter does not apply to existing canals, laterals, ditches, electrical transmission and distribution facilities, rights-of-way and other facilities, structures or equipment owned, operated, used or otherwise possessed by public service corporations and special districts established under title 48, chapter 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 21 or 22.

thats to bad if they sold those saguros to nuseries it would better. Id rather see them in a front yard than mangled

Agree, that is what they did when Lake Pleasant was raised. They probably have liability issues with private operators working under the lines, etc. What really sucks is, in my experience the saguaros in that area are some very nice specimens, clean, healthy, no holes except the natural ones from birds, etc.:frown:

Legal or not, some good pics on an AZ Central blog or other public site would get some people mighty pissed.:mad: Might even get the greenies on our side for once.:hhmm::clap:
Getting the public to notice environmental damage NOT caused be ORVs can only benefit us.
