On my way home from work the truck started to shake violently every time I pressed the break. When I stopped at a traffic light the driver side front wheel practically LOCKED . The truck won't go forward. Traffic backed up behind me about a mile. I tried going in reverse, the wheel unlocked. Fortunately I was very near my house so some how I dragged/drove the truck into my driveway by going on reverse and forward. Ran in the house, pulled out all the tools, pulled the wheel and WHOALA!! The bottom bolt from the caliper is missing . The top one was loose. 5 out of 6 lug nuts were loose on the wheel. I guees this is the result of taking on that obstacle this weekend. I thought I broke a birf or some thing else was broke. Front tire went flat after I parked on the driveway. Pulled the hub to check and make sure bearings and shats were OK.. I guess I have to run to the dealer on my way home from work tomorrow to pick up a 17mm bolt and washer. Hopefully those morons have that bolt, if not I'm gonna be . Thank god it's almost Firday:D .

ya not good

You got lucky. Your dealer will probably not have the bolt. However, I believe a Tundra caliper bolt will work as a temp fix until the right one comes in. I have seen the caliper bolts come loose a suprising number of times. One trail fix that worked great was to pull one of the bolts that holds the rotor to the hub. It's also a temp fix but will work well enough to get you through a few days.

I stock them.....:flipoff2:

Been there. Done that. I didn't torque down the bolts after the Birfield job. I would recommend replacing both caliper bolts as the other one might have stretched.

If you need a replacement 40AE/CE wheel, I believe elmariachi has two FS.

There are 6/7 dealers, usually one of them has'em. I hope. Yeah I thought of that Caliper bolt idea too. I never tried it though. Oh well. I'm gonna let ya'll know, otherwise Dan is getting a phone call :D

Sounds like your flat is due to a hole in your wheel. Calipers are made of much harder material than the wheel is. Check the inside of your wheel, I'm guessing you have about a 3/4" groove dug out of it & you are probably leaking air somewhere in the groove.
REPLACE that wheel!

Thats odd, I foudn the upper one came loose on mine, noticed a clidck when i tapped the brakes pulled over. found bolt missing, tightened the one remaining bolt up with the caliper in the right position and drove home (aobut 4 miles) had a spare in the parts bin and put it back together.
Just so you know it does happen.
Dave

Methinks lots of us are going to be checking the torque of our caliper bolts this weekend.

Glad that appears to be all that happened Riad.

Dan - your are amazing and a tribute.

The Ditch claims a victim..........

Although a tad belated.

I refuse to be a victim yet. :D . I think the tire went flat because I was dragging the truck in my driveway with 3 wheels. Since one wheel was locked. The wheel is fine but my guess is I have ripped the side wall in that tire. I'm gonna take it to NTB and let them fix it. If it bubbles up, you know I'm right. If I knew that I am missing a bolt in the caliper, I'd pull over and tighten the other one. But since I did't know how it feels when a bolt goes missing, I was simply trying to get home. I thought probably an inner shaft was broken or bearing came loose or pads got sticky etc. Also especially in a rush hour traffic it's a bit challenging to stay calm with all the fawkers behind me wondering WTF is wrong and why am I not moving :D . Oh well now I know...

Well thanks reffug. That was very comforting. :D The dealer that is about 40 miles away from me has the bolt but no one has the washer, can I use any other washer in same size or it has to be the exact one?

Riad wasn't the only victim. Ross drove his 62 back out of the trail (past a group of Rovers winching themselves up the first river crossing), down the road to 29, up 29 to Bob's place in Warrenton, and then home to Springfield all with no front brakes because his front right caliper was just hanging there after both bolts stripped out.

Weird that both of you had caliper bolt problems on the same trip. Glad you made it home okay, Riad.

Felix

Yupp the wheel went bad. The hanging caliper caused a full circle scrape on the wheel and there's a crack in there. At least the tire is good. I found some wheel material stuck at the bottom of the caliper. I guess I will PM elmariachi.
