well, today i picked up my second re-built PS pump from the local napa store, and out it in. after i filled up with fluid, i cranked the wheel, and then turned the engine on.
fluid came POURING out fron the front of the pump, where the long bolt holds the resi on.
so, off came the pump, and i called the parts store, and explained my problem. while i rode my bike over, he removed the bolt from the pump i had JUST returned, and i also took along some o-rings.
back home, i pulled out the bolt, and saw that the little o-ring on the bolt was all f**cked up, so i decided to put the bolt from the returned pump back it.
But they are different lengths. so i kept trying combos of o-rings, and even flat washers like used on a/c units, but whenever i put the pump back in operation, fluid POURS out. the last time, it seemed to be coming from inder the pump. so out came the pump AGAIN, and i tightened all six of the 14mm bolt head.
pump goes back in, SAME thing.
so i called the store, and they said that they will have another pump for me Monday, and THIS one, they claim, is an actual factory toyota pump ( re-buiit) rather than some no-name.
my problem, other than having no vehicle till at least monday afternoon, is should i even try anything but a new oem???Cruiser parts has a brand new, with a resi, for about 350 bucks. i would have to pay overnight frt.
i dont know. i really cannot figure out were this stream of fluid wwas coming rom. all the hoses were right. and i dont mean a drip-drip, but a steady stream.
it seems awfully odd that i cannot get a pump that funtions correctly. and this time, i didnt even get a chance to take it on the road, to see if it worked!!!!
im running out of time, patience, and i dont feel like spending almost 400 bucks. the auto parts store has been very acommidating.
what should i do????

i,m not planning on having any extra ones. the napa guys are willing to exchange each time, so i hope not to have any extras.

When you mentioned the o-ring thing, that sort of sparked a memory of mine (something I did a long time ago when I wasn't really paying attention) - What sort of fluid are you putting in the pump?

I know that opinions seem to vary on this one for some reason, but if you put power steering fluid into my pump, it leaks like friggin' crazy. I can remember for a while changing out this o-ring that's accessable from the front of the pump and it would hold for a while, then crap out. Racked my brain out for a while trying to figure that one out, and read every single thing that I could...including the owners manual - and that's where I found my answer. I was putting in the wrong fluid. I pumped out the fluid mix I had, filled it up with automatic transmission fluid and bam, all was right with the world. Make sure you are putting in a Dextron II or Dextron III type ATF.

That's about the only thing I can think of...

Oh yea, the bolts. There are two different special oringed bolts in the front of the pump. The ones with the oring closer to the head are the normal bolts. The ONE with the oring farther from the head is the one the doubles as a mount for the tank. A short bolt in the hole to mount the tank will def' leak. One of the problems with the reman'd pumps is that they are sold for several applications. The mini trucks use almost the same pump but have a remote tank - so they don't need the long bolt.

As for the fluid, Dexron is the rec'd fluid but generic power steering fluid isn't going to cause a big leak.

sorry about your extended hassle with this thing...All I can offer is that when my P/S pump started leaking a few months ago, I was fortunate enough to have the disposable cash to just get a new OEM pump...haven't looked back. I still have the leaker[which pumped fine] and someday when bored maybe Ill take it apart to see how it works. $350 is a decent price for new OEM by the way. Keep us posted about what happens.

Glad to hear that its fixed. So, having done the job several times now, how long does it take you to change the steering pump?
