Howdy-

It has been a while since I have been on the board, my cruiser has actually been running great since I got it back on the road.

However, I need a bit of advice about the axle seals. Right now I have both front axles leaking grease... not gear oil out at the knuckles. I am not sure how far to dig in and really what i am looking for, this area is new territory for me. There is no gear oil seeping out yet, but l am assuming it is like anything else when one part starts to go.

Also, my more immediate need is I do have gear oil comming from my passenger rear axle, I bought a new seal, anything else I ought to do or look at while I have the diff cover off? Also, is RTV good enough for a gasket out back?

Thanks again for your time and advice.

I don't know of RTV is good enough, I've always used a real Toy gasket, only a few $ and worth not have a hassle later.

Yes, while you have the Diff off you should throw a locker in there!

I can't tell what your other issues are caused by...I found goo coming from my knuckles and rebuilt the knuckles/new gaskets and solved the issue...

hope that helps

I've used RTV without any problem, but OEM is always a good way to go.
On the front it sounds like you need to rebuild the knuckles to keep the grease in. Wouldn't hurt to go ahead and replace the inner axle seals while you're in there. Good Luck.

The grease is likely leaking out because it's thinned with gear oil. Gear oil leaks into the knuckle, mixes with the grease and then comes out the seal where you are seeing "grease". Once you start tearing into it you'll likely see that the grease in the knuckle is quite thin.

i just got that gasket when i was putting in my ARB locker its only $6 at toyota and it a lot cleaner

When you say that your knuckles are leaking grease, I assume you mean on the backside, from the knuckle wipers? Knuckle wipers are great at keeping grease in the knuckle (and letting a little spread across the back side of the knuckle). However, once gear oil from the diff starts to contaminate the knuckle grease, the knuckle wipers start to leak. They can't keep grease/oil from seeping by. The gear oil gets into the knuckle because the inner axle oil seal is worn. Getting to it requires a complete axle tear-down. It's a big job. There are lots of posts on doing this. Check out the tech section (in axle/suspendsion) for a few to get you started.

THanks for the help, I will be looking into tearing into the front axle.

Anyone know where the best kit is? At this point I am going with the good stuff, not necessarily the cheapest... but probably not OEM. Any recommendations?

Thanks again!
