I hear water inside my truck...(picts)

Came home tonight with the radio off and heard the sound of water sloshing around. I cannot pinpoint where it is coming from. I thought it was coming from the passenger roof/headliner. Took the wife for a spin and she thinks it's coming from the floorboards/doors. I washed the truck this weekend not sure if this is where the water came from. I have not heard this sound before; I have washed the truck before but only twice. I am in So. CA and we have not had any rain in a long long time. This truck is about three months old to me. Looks like the rack is coming off very soon, when I was looking for where the water sound was coming from noticed there are two bubbles of paint on one of the feet mounting area. It was hidden from me because it was on the inside area of the feet, not easily spotted unless you were looking all the way around the base of the foot. Anyone ever experienced anything like this?

common problem. In the rocker panels there's some drain holes which are plugged. They are smallish slits on the bottom of the rockers. You can also pull the rubber drain plugs (I think) to get the draining process started. But fix the slits by unclogging them.

The sunroof has drain tubes that empty into the rockers. When you washed it you must have got some water into the sun roof drains.

Search for more info.

Thanks for the 411 Riley, once again this site rocks! I have searched the archives and have not found exactly what I am looking for. I believe I found the front slit but the back one is giving me a hard time. Also how in the hell do you clear these things out? I read in one of the posts that you can use a zip-tie, tried that but it only went in about an inch and a half. No water has stated to come out so I figure I need to get it father in there. Is there anything else I can use to clear this slit? The slits are very small no wonder they get clogged. I read that some of you remove the plugs, I am not sure I want to do this because I believe Toyota made it this way for a reason and it should work. However you guys know best so let me know, thanks.

The plugs are there to remove massive quantaties of water quickly (such as after a deep water crossing, where you get water IN the cab).

The slits are more for 'everyday' use.

Newps,

Remove the plugs to let it drain quickly then put them back in. Use a zip tie or a small thin blade of some kind to clear the slits.

As for the rusty feet on the roof rack, this is also a common problem, even in areas of the country where rust is not a problem. You'll want to look under the 4 pads ASAP and search the archives on various suggestions about what to do based on the condition. If you're seeing rust bubbles then you may have to take extreme measures but you have to get a good look before jumping to conclusions. Post pics.

Thanks Beowulf for the info, I am very very aware of the issues with the roof rack. I am sure I am in for a headache with that one. Back to the slits which way do the run? Straight up or too the side? I cannot seem to make any progress in clearing them.

While we're on the subject of drain plugs, do you guys for see any negative effects from leaving out the drain plugs all the time?, Brad.

Road dust gets in quicker.

i'm real good at making the stupid/obvious suggestion, so here it goes...

have you checked around for a water bottle under the seats? how about a jug of coolant in one of the aft storage compartments?

best of luck.

Well I got them clear, pain in the ass. It is very hard trying to figure out which one of the slits is the real one. Only one, (the driver’s side rocker) even remotely looked like one. The rest looked like pinch wealds, the only way I could find them was trail and error. It makes more difficult because you think they are just clogged so you keep stabbing away. Eventually you will find an area where it will slide a little farther. You guys are not kidding when I removed the plug under the rocker a fricking river poured out, looked like three gallons worth. I pulled the rest of the plugs in the other areas and they were all dry. I still cleaned all of them thought. At least the water was clear no signs of rust or black gunk.

Now I have to inspect the roof and the rust around the one foot. Dam I wish I could just stick my head in a hole and pretend it did not exists. I remember reading some horror stories on this site about this problem. This is not going to be fun.

I've heard about these drain holes and plugs for a long time but have never been able to ID them on my truck. Does anyone happen to have a picture of them so I would know what to look for in going about clearing them out?

I do not like to pull the plugs to drain out the water. I prefer to clean the drains and then allow the water inside the rocker to flush the remaining debris through the drains. Often you will need to work them over as they drain. If you drain the rockers by pulling the plugs and then ream the holes with a zip tie they will just fill back up again with mud the next time it rains heavily.

I would take a picture of mine but with the sliders in the way the pic would be useless.

I will snap some picts, you will laugh at them if you an even see them in the picture. Serious they do not even look like anything. I was going with your thought process Dan and was going to use the water trapped in there to clean them out. I had just given up on trying to find them to clean them. Decided to pull all the plugs just to get the water out. I had been working on just the passenger side and could not find anything I could get the zip tie to go in. After I pulled the plugs I went to the driver’s side and there was one I could make out. This gave me target to look for the other three. None of the other three looked like anything more a weld.

Don't you know it's illegal to wash your own car in SoCal Newps. hehehe Water police will get you if you do it weekdays. From a local sheriff - hint, hint, hint - the water police don't work weekends.

Can't resist this one - do you hear dead people in your truck too??

Hope all is well way up north in Newport Beach.

Um,

Hearing is better than smelling, no...........

No but I do hear dumb people all the time. :D

All is well, got to go surf today, it has been 5 weeks. Blew out my eardrum when my surfboard cracked me in the head. Did the hearing test today and Doc said I am good to go. Glad that is over.

LOL! :D

Glad you are back in the surf!

Pictures of slits

Keep in mind that these look a lot better since I took a screwdriver to them to open them up. First one is the diver's side rocker; second one is the driver's side rear.

Thanks!
