master key clarification question

another master key question...from the FAQ is this the real test to determine if you have a master key???

----OK, one last attempt to make this clear based on what I've learned- hope this helps!!!

ALL KEYS can be "master" or "sub" keys- this is dependent on the way each is programmed.

GREY NON TRANSMITTER KEYS: These are reffered to as "valet" because they can only access certain MECHANICAL functions, that meaning they are different by the way that the profile on the steel shank of the key is cut, to keep johnny acne face valet driver from riffling though the stuff in your glovebox! (like he'd want to steal my owners manual!!!)

ELECTRONICALLY These can be programmed as masters or as sub keys!!!

BLACK TRANSMITTER KEYS: MECHANICALLY, these, assuming they are cut the way they are supposed to be cut from Toyota, can open any mechanical lock on the vehicle.

ELECTRONICALLY These can also be MASTER or SUB keys depending on how they are programmed. The easiest way to tell is to insert the key into the ignition

TEST METHOD FOR ALL KEYS

RED SECURITY LIGHT OUT IMMEDIATELY: Master Key- Bonus!!

RED SECURITY LIGHT STAYS ON FOR ~ 1 SECOND AFTER INSERTING: You've got a sub key, hope for your sake that you have a master somewhere! Or, hopefully, your vehicle hasnt had the TOYOTA "goodwill" EG ECU replacement done yet- It is apparently tracked by VIN, not by owner, and its a one shot deal- They'll only do it one time per VIN, after that - you pay the big dough!

I am gonna test on an 03 tomorow...where exactly is security light? on the dash?

Security light is right next to the clock, just above the A/C switch

Just in case you don't get a master. If you get an 2001 or newer, the dealer should be able to reprogram the ECU & key via TIS online. While TIS says it can be done once, apparently the dealer can negotiate with TIS to do it more often. If you buy from a non-Toyota/Lexus dealer, then hopefully you have a good relationship with one to get the service done.

Not correct.

The transponders are different. Masters are masters, subs are subs.
 
The Immobiliser System can be reset several times, as long as the vehicle supports this function (2001 or newer). The only catch is that there is a daily limit to how many times we can do it on 1 vehicle (not going to affect most of you).

Correct, no valets with the remote head bits.

But the remote keys can still be programmed as a sub-key. I have a built-in keyless remote key (in fact its the only key that I have), which is NOT a master key. It has been programmed as a sub-key and therefore I cannot add any additional keys to my ECM until I get it flashed.

I have tried adding additional keys several times to no avail, and when I insert my key into the ignition, the security light stays on for about a second before shutting off.

Clear as Mud

The difference between a "Valet Key" and a "Master Key" is in the mechanical cutting of the key blank.
The difference between a "Sub Key" and a "Master Key" is in the programming of the chip.
The programming sequence I downloaded from TIS gives two different procedures for programming ignition keys (i.e., keys that will start the engine). One is for "Master Keys" and the other is for "Sub Keys". The sequence for the key in/on/off/brakepedal/gopedal/yadayadayada and other hoops are different for programming purposes. The "Sub Keys" can't be used as a "Master" to program ANY key (not even one with a built in remote) to start the engine.
What I have read on the forum, there is a limit to the number of "Master Keys" allowed on some model years, and you have to have Special Programming done by the dealer or others, so that you can program new "Master Keys".
A key that won't open the glove box but will start the engine has been cut to be a valet key, and has probably been programmed to be a "Sub Key". It could still be a "Master Key", depending on how it was programmed.
