A 105 is pretty-much an 80-series with a new 100-series body.

It is not as comfortable as a UZJ
It does not have the power of the V8
It does not have other technical improvements the UZJ has
It does not drive or handle near as well (no IFS)

It IS the most off-road capable 100-series but that's one small improvement at the expense of everything else. :)

Oh, I forgot the UZJ100 picture. Same type of climb exceot your pic was on slickrock and mine was on loose and uneven rock. :)

Your list sounds like a list for tar based performance only. :)

With the OME kit the drive is as good as my 120 series IFS cruiser (which I sold). The V8 has more power but straight 6 give more than enough for the most demanding off roading or tar driving.

But to say it is not as confortable as the UZJ depends really if you like all the luxuries and pampering that the 100 series offer. There are no visor mirrors in the 105 after all, my wife says I am vain enough any ways. :)

I guess I'm too spoiled/picky by the UZJ. My 80 (105) drives on and off road like a big truck compared to the smooth and tight IFS UZJ. Handling on and off road is dramatically better on the 100. Every time I'm off-road in my 80 I long for the 100. Only when I come to a body-damage obstacle am I glad I have the 80. Try to compare your 105 to a UZJ100 (not a 4-Runner/120).

And if off-road is the main consideration then an 80 is the unit of choice. It's the same guts as a 105 though in a smaller body which helps. :)

Why my 80 kicks 100 ass:

1. my rear cargo windows open fully and can do it forward or backward, and if I get crazy - a little of both!

2. I can order a 6" lift online, install it in a day, slap on 37's, wheel it around, then take the truck back to stock in a day! Do that in a 100 :flipoff2:

3. your v8 makes a punny 20-30 hp more at peak than my i-6 beauty, so what. Where are you going to use that to drop me? Traffic sucks just about anywhere and it really doesn't matter once you leave pavement. But my i6 in particular will leave you and your timing belt driven, weak lower end, v8 at a stop light :grinpimp:

4. I didn't pay for lockers.

5. My truck came with the ability to easily turn the ABS on and off.

6. I have 4 more wheel lugs :bounce:

7. 2 OEM battery trays - nuf said.

8. Slee only makes an 80 transfer case skid plate

9. I only have to adjust toe-in for steering and can do this with a shower curtain rod :grinpimp: Try keeping your fancy camber, caster IFS crap as dialed in after 10 years of washboard - NOT!

Since this 80 vs 100 debate is apparently neverending, might as well ask it here:

How hard is it to convert a US spec. IFS 100 series to SFA? And can it be done with OEM parts?

Not sure exactly, I would think you should be able to do it with 105 parts. In fact just a month or two ago there was a 105 frame (maybe axles/chassis too? can't remember) for sale here in the US, it may still be in the classifieds...

Can't be done with all OEM parts due to the frames being different. You can't just bolt some OEM stuff onto your 100 series. SAS is not too hard for experienced shop. Bentup in Sacremento area has SAS'd several Tundras and Demello Off-Road in Santa Ana just SAS'd a 2005 Tacoma.

One obstacle I'd see to a average or lower level DIY'er is non-leaf spring SAS conversions are pretty hard to set up.

And I dont think anyone would want to slap leaves under the front of a 100.

Actually, If someone donated a 100 series to a Mad Scientist type like Luke Porter, this could easily happen.

Of course, you could get an LX470 and get a 3" lift by just pressing a button. :flipoff2:
