Was going to start to remove the Trans and tranny in the 40 last night. I wanted to take the hump out and when I took ou the seats and gas tank this is what I found.

The gas tank had 5 pounds of wet dirt from PO around and under it and a lot of rust on both tank and floor. The holes are where I cut the rust out. You can see my solution to the problem at the top of the picture. I didn't want to put metal back in since I'm planning on doing a frame off in the fall. This is just a temp fix.

This is the tank.

Two layers of biaxle cloth and 3 of strand and this is what I have.

You can see the bondo YES bondo the PO used to patch the rust on the tank. It was pretty deep.

Sanded and ready to glass up.

All I need is to sand and coat the inside of the tank.
Anyone know of a good product to coat the inside of the tank?
And what would you use as a spacer inbetween the tank and floor the original foam was shot and water logged which caused this problem in the first place.

That's pretty much what mine looked like when I got the 40 - I used a 3M wheel and some POR 15 on the tub (wasn't rusted though) and bought a poly tank. POR 15 makes a tank sealer that's supposed to be good (kinda pricey) - and I'd just buy some of that strip foam w/ one side adhesive since it's a temp fix.

haven't checked the bottom of my tank yet...but what should I use for a more permanent spacer if I can salvage the situation? (I hope mine doesn't look like yours...that's a bummer.)

I got my poly tank either from tpi or jtoutfitters,, the biggest problem is the volume is like 10 gal instead of 14 or so ,,,
I used some stuff I found at hdepot to go under area rugs so they dont slid on hard woods,
it does not absorb liquid, it is spongy, and mesh like, kinda sticky too so the tank wont move

POR-15 is a good product. Don't be afraid to try it.

You need a drain hole!

search around, I've heard tons of complaints about the poly tanks sweating and swelling.

You can get a liner kit for your metal tank called "creme" I believe it's for motorcycle tanks. I used the kit on my 45 and sealed the tank so tight I couldn't get any fuel out of the pickup tube

Thanks 3pits I ordered one from tpi. With it costing 60$ for the gas tank liner and all the hassle having to clean the old tank out I felt $159 was a steal. And I'll never have to worry about it again. Did you have any problem with the fuel filler or any of the hoses?

I didn't galss the tank drain. I made sure to glass around it. Though I need to do some more investigating on this sweeting and swelling thing.

160 bucks for a plastic tank....

HMMMMM

There are pleanty of threads out here where people have gone on and on about how the poly tank will not seal around the sending unit, hose connections, etc.

A new steel tank, painted and cleaned around every other year or so would have lasted you the rest of your life, without a single fitment issue....

Good luck!

The tank on my 74 chevy pu started dripping out the bottom one day, I pulled the rock shield off the front and found the same situation. I patched it with "Marinetech"(hope I spelled it right), that I found at Bi-Mart. I hoped it would tide me over until I could afford a new tank, that was about ten years ago, and its still holding great.

I would use a bicycle inner tube cut and glued down.

And I did a search and yes there are issues with the poly tank but there were more people saying they were good than bad. And yes me being 34 and the last gas tank lasting 28 years you are probably correct on a metal stock tank lasting as long as me but the poly tank comes with a lifetime warranty and it's 150 less.

AND.........CruiserDan can sell you a new Toyota tank for a price not ALL that far from that poly price. A middlin' two digit difference.

I know this because I received a brand new '67 (earliest available) tank for my '65 (exact match to old one) on Monday.

Hey Marshall, why are you lookin for a new tank, Looks like you got all the old rust off and that glass work looks really good. I would think that you are good to go, esp once you clean and coat the inside of the tank. Just my 2 cents, I'd spend that money on somethin esle. Unless I'm missin something.

Later chuck

Well ther is a lot of rust in the tank and it was a pain to get all the gas out of it in the first place I can only imagine the time I will have to spent to put the por 15 system in it and trust that I get it right. This will be a good temp fix for right now. Plus the tank was really rusted through bad and even though I did this on my 73 I just don't feel comfortable puting one as bad as this back in. Also I really want to spend my time gettin the rear oil leak and trans and tranny rebuilt. SO I can take it camping in a couple of weeks.

Very true, have you looked on the for sale site to see if anyone is sellin one who is parting out there 40. Just another idea, Good Luck.

yeah definetely use rubber, not something like, say... carpet strips that hold water and rust four big holes in the bottom of a perfect stock tank. And as poser said insecting it once a year is not a bad idea

Hi All:

Oh, the poly gas tank - I went down that path a loong time ago! ;-)

The gas tank was the first part I replaced on my FJ40, like two monthes after I bought it. I got the "damn fool idea" to put some "fuel sytem & carb cleaner" in the gas tank of my newly purchased Land Cruiser - came outside a bit later and there is a nice sheen of gasoline on the driveway! Crap! I think and go retreive an old plastic cat litter box from the garage of the rental house. Later I discovered that the plastic used in the litter box was not compadable with gasoline . . . . . . .

So, I went searching for a 40 Series fuel tank. Ended-up buying a poly gas tank for about US$50 less than a OE steel tank. I've said all along that I was foolish not to spend the extra few $$ and get an OE replacement part.

The poly tank that I have is smaller in capacity than the stock metal tank (but I'm not sure of how much less.) All the hose hook-ups were in a different place than the stock tank (requiring longer hoses) and only the gas pick-up was marked. The poly tank I have does not seal well - I believe it requires a fully-functioning smog system - which my rig does not possess. I finally solved the pressure issue by drilling three small holes through the gas cap and it's seal to allow for expansion due to allitude or temperature changes.

I must save that the poly tank that CCOT is currently selling looks O.K. They offered a photo on their web page as to how to hook-up the various hoses correctly, and they sell an replacement hose set. This may be a reasonable replacement for s stock fuel tank.

Oh, BTW - I had the poly gas tank out of my rig for the first time in six or so years and it is fine - with the poly tank those "pads" underneath the tank seem unneccesary.

HTH.

Regards,

Alan
