Curious what GROUP/Size the FZJ80 battery is?

IIRC, you can SQEEEEEEEZE a group 31 in the tray.
 
The FZJ80 battery is indeed a BCI (Battery Council International) group 27F. The FJ80 utilizes a group 27. The only difference is the post orientation. With the posts closest to you an "F" battery will have the positive post on your right. A "standard" battery will have it on the left. The "F" designation originates from the Ford Motor Company as they used batteries with "backwards" posts.
 
what are the minimum electrical specs one should make sure to get?

So, if i am installing a second battery into my rig using an early FJ80 pass side battery tray, i would want the 27 (non F) correct?

That's up to you, since you'll be wiring it. So you can have the battery terminals fit whatever you choose. The reason the F is specified on the original tray is that the factory harness forces the terminal locations because they're only long enough for the factory harness. Clear as mud?

Personally, I'd duplicate what's on the factory tray in the event you needed to swap them to get going for some reason. After all, it could not only function as a backup battery, but a spare to be fitted in yours or a fellow 80.

So what would be wrong with not using a group 27? How about a 34f?

It wouldn't fit in the tray.
 
I'm using a 34f Optima red top, with enough room in the tray for 2qts of oil and a qt of gear oil. So other than fit, is there any other reason against other groups.

Do the "Bigger" batteries have any advantages? They appear to have the same specs on paper!
 
There is no sense to battery sizing and a Group 34 is smaller than a group 27. A group 31 is larger than a group 27. The key numbers are cranking amps and amp hours. Use the biggest that will fit, especially if you have a bunch of accessories or run a fridge with a single battery. I have a group 31 as my main battery and a group 27F as my second, the thinking being that I would have a spare main if needed for me or to lend to a friend.

RC 110 (don't know what RC is but it was underneath CCA on the label)
 
The reason for reversed posts is to reduce the chance of a short. You will notice that the batteries are set up so that the positive post is toward the centerline of the vehicle. This places the post farther away from the underside of the hood and the fender apron making it harder to contact ground accidently.

Which is the criteria that should also be used for selecting the passenger side battery post layout.
 
Personally, i like Dougs idea of copying the drivers side so you can either swap yours out or lend it to a buddy if need be! This is probably what i will do!

With the appropriate wiring dual batteries can be set up so either battery can start the vehicle without any swapping being required.
