Hey Mud,
I'm getting ready to sell the 2F out of my DD and I need a little help settling on a reasonable price. I got it used; I think it had recently been rebuilt. I've been running it daily for two years. Here's the relevant info:
It runs strong and has been utterly reliable. Starts...
In Real Time:
Swapping FJ60 3rds into my '40. Both 3rds appear to be in good condition, but pinion preload on the rear 3rd (which I will install in my front axle), was WAY high--hard to turn by hand. I had to back the lock nut off about 1/4-1/2 turn to get the preload right. If I torque the...
Does anyone know of a good color of vinyl dye for the graphite gray interior parts of a 40 such as the plastic part of the heater and the headrests?
I used 'Charcoal Gray' vinyl dye for the bench seat I'm installing:
But it's more of a navy blue than a gray and I will have to re-dye it...
Here's a link to an early FJ40 TV commercial:

Here are my questions:
1. What did Toyota mean by: 'and when you head for home, the Toyota Land Cruiser is fast; it cruises at 85 miles per hour all day long'? Is there early documentation claiming 85mph as a top speed?
2...
Duffontap's 9/76 FJ40: From Here to Daily Driver in Two Years?
Pic taken ten minutes ago:
:hhmm: Well, it's worth a try.
The disassembly is the hardest part right? Now all I have to do is weld the tub up and paint it.
Joking aside, I'm hoping to have everything but...
I'm stuck between just using Rust-Oleum Professional at $28 per gallon, or jumping way up to a catalyzed automotive paint at $200+ per gallon. Most of my painting experience has been with acrylic enamels from Napa, but I haven't been super impressed with the longevity.
I've seen a lot of MUD...
The needle on my oil pressure gauge has never budged in the time I've owned the truck. I have removed the rocker cover with the engine running a few times to make sure the top end is getting lots of oil (it is), so I just figured my sender didn't work.
Today I installed a brand new sender...
I'm ready to order a set of seat covers to redo my '77 bucket seats. Here are the main options I'm considering:
CCOT: $319.36 shipped.
SOR: $365.00 shipped.
Cruiser Corps: $326.25 shipped.
They all look great and claim to be as good as it gets. I've heard that the stitching on the CCOT...
Pictures would be fantastic, but a good explanation would suffice. I'm looking at a set of steelies on CL, but the owner doesn't know what year they came off of.
Thanks, JD
I'm looking for info on what FJ40's cost new, particularly in the first few years they were available in the US. I'm interested in comparing original prices with those of Scout 80's from the same era in order to confirm a theory I've been propounding recklessly for the last few months...
Like the title says: I just started 50 NR auctions with $0.99 starting bids on FJ40 parts from mostly '77-'78 rigs (a few from a '69 FJ40). Most are shipping in FRB's and I'm happy to combine multiple items into a single box and pass the savings on. I'm trying to get through my last year of...
I discovered the other day that my vacuum advance wasn't working anymore so I started looking for replacement parts/units. After core deposit, Napa's remanufactured units are about $140, which seems reasonable enough. I only need the vac assembly, but the only place I found one was on...
Making Rear Quarters: How Hard Can it Be? A 9/76 Sweat Equity Resto
I'm in serious need of some new quarter panels. Mine were badly molested by the PO with a jigsaw, they have serious creases in both corners from being backed into things, and they have rust-throughs where the wheel wells are...
I bought this in a FJ40 parts lot and don't recognize it. It's much smaller than the 2F carb--so much smaller I wonder if it was even on the 1F but a bunch of the parts were off a '69 FJ40 that had been wrecked. Looks like a 36/32 and it's a progressive. Number on the carb is 7013.
Exhausted...
I went into the local Englund Marine the other day and asked if they carried Zero Rust Prep Step. The guy took off and came back a couple minutes later with a gallon of Prep Step in a green gel formula that he says was discontinued by Zero Rust. He said I could just have it.
Now I can't...
After spending about 5 hours searching in the FAQ and elsewhere for an answer, I just have to ask:
I've been running my self-desmogged '78 Aisan carb without hooking the choke breaker/throttle positioner to manifold vacuum. Recently I saw a post where someone (I believe Pin_Head) recommended...
My '76 FJ40 has had over 2" of slop at the steering wheel since I bought it. I referenced Haynes, which reports:
"It is not recommended that any overhaul of the steering gear is attempted since special tools and equipment are required."
I did some searching on MUD and discovered that the...
