Time to pass it on... or back. '67 returns home.

My wife and I have had a great experience these past seven years restoring and caretaking my friend Chris's '67 after he passed away. Many good memories- we won a trophy at our local car show; I got to prove it was not a garage queen by taking it through the Cascade Mountains here; and we loved...

My '67 on the Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

Haven't been too active here since finishing the rebuild, but thought I'd share a clip of the trip my buddy and I did last month in the Cascade Mountains. After winning at our local car show, everyone said 'You're crazy- taking that beauty into the woods?!' My reply- 'that's what it was made...

'67 hole under front of hood

Not sure why I haven't asked this question (or figured it out for myself), but what's this hole for? My rig was almost 100% intact original when I got her (actually, 'him'- "Uncle Chris" is it's name), and there wasn't anything related to this hole, no added hood release mechanism. The hood...

Early Rig- Should I have concerns?

Hey Guys. My intention in rebuilding my '67 was to use it, not have a garage queen (though it's still almost as clean as in this picture). So my buddy and I are planning to do the WABDR (Washington Backcountry Discovery Route) this year. I intend to be gentle with it, but what are some areas of...

Early ('67) Steering Center Arm Adjustment

Can't believe I didn't rebuild the arm when I had the entire truck in pieces two years ago, but it seemed to have no slop in it. Now, after 2000 miles, I've noticed excessive grease, then excessive play and so I rebuilt using the SOR kit- thanks, whoever it was, who suggested trimming the lower...

Small hole in fuel filler tube

You might have seen my post in "what have you done to your..." about parking on a slope with a full tank. Just noticed this small hole by the gas cap, which seems purposeful and original. This is actually where the fuel came out, not through the cap itself. What's the purpose, to avoid a...

    '67 Clutch pedal travel adjustment

I've got a totally stock setup and find that to get the spec pedal free play of roughly ¼" I have to unscrew the pushrod on the pedal all the way out, literally all the way. Pedal height is correct at 7 and change inches from floor (don't have my book in front of me), and play at the clutch...

    Single Barrel Leak- SD40. '67

So I've read about the leaks others have with old carbs, and to expect some leakage, but it seems to drain out even faster than it did when I first got the rig back together a year ago after a complete rebuild, including the carb. The bowl is drained in less than 8 hours or so (used to be...

For Sale  Roof Redo?- These help: Clecos and Aluminum Rivets SOLD SOLD

Done with my rebuild. Putting the roof rail back onto the fiberglass was made easier with the Kleco clamps. The original holes are ⅛" so the Klecos fit tight in those. I put them in every 6th hole or so and then drilled out the other holes to fit the 5/32" aluminum dome topped rivets to make...

For Sale  FJ40 Thermostat Housing / Water pump

The thermostat housing came in a box from the PO. The water pump was on the F135 engine and worked fine, no leaks, bearing feels solid- I just had a new one when I was rebuilding so installed that one. This one has been beadblasted (outside only) and painted.

For Sale  FJ40 Roof weatherstripping- SOLD SOLD SOLD

The front corner pads (not shown), pole tabs, and front piece are OEM. The big piece is aftermarket which is a straight strip so the corners would need to be kerfed. There's a lip that would seal the outside edge, but it does not have a lip on the inside, just flat. Worth a try, but I'd...

    Windshield Hood Bumper Orientation

Which direction is correct, high part front or back? I've seen pictures of them both ways, including both ways on the FJCompany website (though the shape is different in each one). Because I have a spotlight in the windshield, I can't fold mine down to see which way is functionally correct.

Retrofitting Shoulder Harnesses in Front- '67

So what have people done to add another level of safety with 3-point belts? I know I should've done this before paint and body work, but I was dragging my feet on the issue. It's cool being stock, but it isn't all that safe. Of course, the 17 gallons of fuel under the wife is another story.

    rear bumperette orientation

I just noticed something about the bumperettes- one side is straight, the other is curved. And they come in a matched pair. So, which goes to which side? Too late, of course, since I just touched up the paint on the bolts and don't think I need to swap it if it's wrong, but...

'67 Hesitation on Acceleration unless I have a little manual choke on

So every time I drive this thing, it seems to run better and better, shifting smoother, etc. One thing I haven't addressed is that I have to leave the choke pulled out a little bit (less than ½") to avoid stumbling on takeoff. The carb is the original SD40, and I rebuilt it (ah, there's the...

Restoring your rusted roof frame? I've got extra blind nuts to pass on. [EDIT-SPOKEN FOR ALREADY]

If you're looking at what I found in the roof frame, these were a good replacement to weld in. Starting the process of clearing out my garage after this 3 years saga (starting with the smallest items for some reason). Free, but you cover postage. This was one of the few good ones.

Square Head Bolts off a '67- What did I miss?

Going over my re-zinced hardware, I've got some bolts I don't know what to do with. The 3 were in a bag that said 'Hood?', but staring at the hood, there's nothing that pops out (guess, 'cause it's all bolted down really well). The chrome spear has three bolts integral to it, so it's not that...

Rear Hatch Drain Hole Plugs- Why?

So why would there be plugs in these holes if they're there to drain out any water that somehow gets in? Wouldn't it be best to leave them open?

    Windshield Cap Rivets

Putting the top back together (final task in this three year journey!) and want to get the windshield cap securely back onto the fiberglass. Question- were they flush originally? Mine were, but they could've been sanded down in the course of 50 years and a few coats of paint we found on the...
