It's not the top shock mount either. It might well be something with the spring and the bump stop cone thingy but not sure. Working a bunch of nightshifts atm but once that's over I'll investigate more. My theory is that it's the swaybar moving side to side as the weight shifts between left/right sides at the front making it hit the RHS superflex radius arm. But that's just a theory still.
I found an old thread on lcool covering the sort of clunk I'm getting:

and one of the things mentioned is elongated radius arm mount holes either on the axle housing or on the chassis. That's something I hadn't considered and as my 80 is 26 yrs old it's a possibility. But if it is the chassis mount for the swaybar on the RHS then that's spot-on where the clunk noise comes from.
