My HDJ81 came from Japan with what I believe are Doninson 3-4" springs, 2" spacers, and Ranchero adjustable shocks. After removing the spacers, caster correction, and a DC driveshaft it's pretty good. With the longer shocks now and shorter springs I have an amazing amount of droop but I'm sure I sacrificed up travel. In the rear the upper mount has some sort of drop mount which lowers the mount about 2" so I guess they could make 10" shocks work with the 6" lift.
I'm looking at upgrading my shocks but I would love the keep a similar amount of droop by using a longer shock with a recessed mount in the rear. Eventually I will get new springs as well because at my droop they come unseated so I need a Slinky or Dobinson flex I cool to stay in place.
Does anyone make a mount for the rear to allow a longer shock or should I just put stock mounts in and use the typical 10" shock that Icon and King uses?

Slinky shocks are a full 12" travel shock that fit in the stock shock mounts without any spacers. Droop is at acceptable amount. ;)

My issue with the Slinky kit is two fold. First, I would have to contact a distributer and see if I could buy just a set of shocks. I want the stage 4 but if I had to buy the whole $4k kit at one time it will never happen. There seem to be a ton of spring options but none of them are listed on th websites. Second, I was hoping for a progressive or dual rate coil. I know the slinkys are dual rate but unless you are flexing then the small coils are dead and it's just a linear spring.

In terms of shock length aren't the ICONs pretty similar in their kit?
2.5 VS RR resi 4" to 6" lift
Front 57803 15.95" - 27.88"
Rear 57804 16.97" to 28.3"

AutoCraft Spec Icon 2.0 IFP SHOCKS
Front AC56509 15.35"/26.17"
Rear AC56510 15.6"/25.67"
Front AC56511 16.85"/28.17" (Rec BS 1")
Rear AC56512 16.85"/27.42" (Rec BS 1")
(Bump stop recommendation by Dylan)

Then there was the digressive vs linear/progressive valving of the ICONs vs Kings but it looks like Kings loose on travel as they are 10"

25001-351 27.2 - 17.18 3-5" lift
25001-309 31.7 - 18.9 6" lift

The shocks can be purchased separately. There's no requirement to purchase a complete kit.

It's not entirely true that the smaller coils are dead unless you're flexing. There is still a "transition" zone in the coil as it tapers and where the small winds aren't completely collapsed and you get the dual rate performance. I can tell you without a doubt that the ride of the Slinkys over small bumps etc (where you want the dual rate performance) is MUCH better than any linear rate coil I've had in the past.

The differences with the Slinky shocks, besides how they are tuned, is also in the shock dimensions. While the extended and compressed lengths are very similar, the length of the shock body differs slightly IIRC to allow for more travel without the need for bumpstop changes. For the 3" Slinky kit there is no need for a bumpstop spacer in the front and only 1" increase in the rear.

It would be cool if somebody made these again then you could run some super long shocks! Although you’d just likely run into other problems as you go.
