Location
Too far north. Too far east.
Head gasket.
Timing chain.
Now major oil puking.

It started leaking someplace between Durango and Cuba, when I noticed oil under the radiator, but assumed it wasn't mine. By 550 and Unser I was blowing smoke, so I pulled off. The entire underside of the truck was wet and dripping, and the engine bay was soaked with oil. It took two quarts. Between RR and home it puked another quart.

I thought it was the front crank seal, but when I pulled the oil pump off the seal looked great (Toyota seal). It was also replaced in the last two years. I replaced it anyway while I had the pump off.

Two cans of engine cleaner later, and a trip to the car wash ... the truck is still puking oil. It's either from the front of the head at the gasket (not likely), or from the fuel pump block-off plate. I tried to tighten down the two bolts, and one is stripped. Guess I'll be draining the radiator so I can get the hose out of the way and sinking in a heli-coil. At least I'll start there. I'm surprised it would leak that much oil from that location.

This truck is really begging for a 3RZ.

3RZ, just do it

Very good choice...

Or, maybe a 1KD-FTV

:grinpimp:

Geez Onur, send me to Wiki will you. I'm looking for a quick install, not something that will take years of solving and fabrication. Besides, it sounds like there are unresolved issues with the engine.

or maybe just replace with a '97 FZJ80 40th anniv edition with a 2.5" lift...... :-)

Ok.

Go to the next generation...

2KD-FTV...

Here is probably the most cost effective solution...

Though Jon will never go to the dark side me feels....

;)

My 4Runner has a better range than an 80.

Well, he threw me a beach ball.....

Update. I'm pretty sure it was the fuel pump block off plate. That is fixed, and I didn't see any new oil. That said, I noticed it was running rough as well, and figured the oil leak might have also lead to a manifold leak. Not.

It appears #3 is not firing. I've checked spark through the plug wire. So it must be fuel. Is it possible for oil to soak the injector connector causing a misfire?

Why not a 5VZ?

Red Chili with Rising Sun has done this very sweet conversion. That engine is very wide and a tight squeeze under the hood of a Gen1 4Runner. I seem to recall a body lift is needed, he had to trim his fenders, and modify his hood. I really don't need a V6 and this conversion is more work than I want to put into the truck. The 3RZ will be an easier install and the down time will be less. You need to remember the 4Runner is my daily driver.

2x
plus it has 4Runner blood in it already, no anti-rejection drugs needed;)

Also when has a 5VZ-FE ever failed on the trail....:crybaby:

Only the most cost effective until you start feeding it...

I had a little discovery yesterday when I fixed the block off plate that I forgot to mention. There was a lot of oil in the throttle body, down into the plenum. I'm not sure where it was blown in from, but suspect the breather hose from the top of the rocker arm cover that feeds into the TB.

I emailed Ryan and his opinion is the engine should not have been leaking that much oil from the fuel pump block off plate, and thinks something is going on with #3 "pressurizing the crankcase."

I did a compression check.

#1: 185 psi
#2: 185 psi
#3: 85 psi
#4: didn't bother.

Something has clearly failed in the #3 cylinder.

So, who has the engine hoist?

Bummer! Sorry to hear about all the trouble Jon. Good luck getting things figured out, but it sounds like you are on the right track now. BTW, I'm liking the 3RZ idea. No one can say you haven't got your money's worth out of this engine!
