SAS prep pretty much done today
Adjusted valves
Re-torqued the head bolts
Re-torqued manifold bolts
Check all suspension bolts
Checked transfer case & diff fluids
Checked brakes
Need to rotate the tires, and maybe get new air & fuel filters...
Fixed.
Problem:
I bought an analog voltmeter from a nearby Napa for $25 and it showed 2V at the bulb socket. Chased it upstream until I had 12V. Completely worth the $25.
Cause:
That’s daylight through the real wheel well.
Solution:
Depin...
@Butt Ugly Chuck came by for a couple hours this morning and helped me assemble the drivetrain and get it dry fit.
Now to tear it all apart, powder coat it and get to building this beast.
Stance it almost perfect, right at a 1" rake.
A few things on my punch list for SAS9. Fluid changes to Amsoil and all new Toyota hardware for the brakes. I got lazy last year driving over the passes to SAS8 and boiled my brakes coasting downhill with a trailer. Since then I’ve had pedal...
We’re so back.
This is the same 9inHg I had before but at 750rpm rather than 900 - so this is even better. My theory is that the vac nipple on the back of the carb was leaking the whole time, but then yesterday it must have gotten jostled...
We got it. Had the legend BVB come lay hands on her. Couple things:
Yes, the valve lash being set to stock is NOT what this cam wants. Bill actually came in guessing intake valves, so we were both honing in on the same thing. Loosening up the...
Changed the battery and oil and it fired right up after two years in the garage. I’ve missed this truck.
I forgot that the exhaust burbles on decel occasionally. Got the carpet finished up and it only took over a year to redo it all. Pictures...
Got the driveshafts, hood, skid plates, and interior buttoned up yesterday and drove 1.1 miles. Truck fires up and idles great until it doesn’t - it intermittently wants to die unless my foot is on the gas. Vacuum gauge is reading a whopping 5...
Up next is the ring break in. I used Amsoil 30wt break in oil for the cam run-in shown above and already dumped it last night while it was hot. I’ve filled it with Driven GP1 30wt break in oil and a new Toyota filter. I’ll use that oil for the...
Many thanks is to @batthewmrown for coming by and giving us an extra set of hands last night, and some sanity checks during start up.
I had originally primed the oil pump and stabbed the dizzy at verified TDC on #1. The valve cover was off so...
Also…
She’s alive. Cam break in is done.
Tomorrow is:
Install driveshafts and skid pans
Install front end and bumper
Put the shift boots back on
Warm the engine up and redo the valves
Remove the tee for the dual oil pressure senders
…then drive.
@Skniper Oh yeah Steve’s still doing his thing, enjoying retirement. He’s still got Frosty the 100 and Bart the 62. And he’s still putting in the work helping me muscle transmissions on occasion too. He’ll probably see that I tagged him in a...
Was a great weekend in the shop. Been a long time since there’s been this much activity. Unfortunately I did not take a single pic but here are some that the guys sent me. Saturday Daniel @LETSROLLEM repurposed some OME springs and gave his 60...
Had some big assistance from @overhanger yesterday morning - we got the transmission in and the crossmember attached. The engine is fully supported now. I was right that the clutch was slightly off center, but instead of loosening the pressure...
Spent 8 hours yesterday doing paint correction followed by a thorough wax job, then wheel polish and interior detailing. Amazing that original paint is able to hold up this well! We took her into Houston to our favorite microbrewery this...
I cleaned up the garage so I can work on it at some point I hope… I have a new oil pan, @TRAIL TAILOR fender apron seals, and @ChaserFJ60 USB charger and AC drier spacer. Just realized I bought some of those parts well over a year ago. Time...
Motor is in! No drama, went very smooth. Karen is a whiz with the hoist maneuvering, and my friend Josie came by to assist as well. We should just let the girls do this stuff, they seem way better at it.
Spent some time with JB Weld on the...
Karen’s feeling accomplished tonight. Old motor has been liberated. Despite running to some difficulties today, we saw it through and made big progress.
This thing came to us with two quarts of oil and 105psi compression (except for number 1...
Field work in the Red Hills of south Alabama. This is a region with a multitude of dirt roads that turn to a red snot when wet. We've been getting a lot of rain this year and these roads were particularly slimy today. These photos show the...
