I live in the rustbelt and I love my Aqualu cruiser. It is my DD through the winter months and I have a roadster to drive in the summer. My 40 has a full tub with cowl, windshield frame, running boards, aprons, fenders, and front bib. The...
100% agree on the aluminum tubs from Aqualu as a viable option. I’ve installed two with good results. And if you are in the rust belt, you’ll never have to worry about rust repair on your tub again.
Have you looked at the aluminium tubs? Patching in panels is tedious but doable work - lots of build threads with vids to show you how. Get a good welder that can use small diameter wire and practice on thin sheet metal until you figure it out...
If it was mechanically perfect (or close to it), runs, drives, etc. amazing, and YOU can do all the body and paint work without farming it out AND you have the time, money and talent for the project, then it could be worth taking on.
Price? If...
Guess that answers the door limit needing to be modified. Been forty years since I added 79 doors onto my 68. Wasn't positive I needed to widen the opening. I've also run FST doors on my 68 which are even thinner than the early two piece hard...

You're safer driving drunk than riding with a teenager.
FJ40's are death traps compared to modern vehicles and teenagers can't drive for crap.
That's wouldnt be a stock wheel. Stk wheels are 5 1/2" wide. A 72 wheel(drum brake) would have the centers riveted the rim. Later models are welded and will clear the caliper if you decide to upgrade to disc brakes in the front.
My first Cruiser was a 1977 FJ55 I bought in 1987. It was just starting to bubble in all the usual spots. It was my DD and I took it to Assateague Island to drive on the beach. It was a blast. But the boxed frame held sand over the years and...
Have you considered trying to free up the F engine? Just because it's seized doesn't mean it's toast. It could just be ridges on the cylinder wall that are keeping it from turning.
Was at a random shop in western NC and found this guy laying there going to waste. I’m not a 40 guy yet so it may not be for a 40 at all. But if anyone needs a hard top, I’ll let you know The shop it was at and you can go ask to buy it. It looked...
