I had some parts repaired at our local fab shop. This is a picture of Frank beside his 1941 Cincinnati press brake. Frank fought in Asia during WWII and is turning 92 next month.
Applied some Griot’s wax, careful not to overbuff and there is a lot more shine to gain in the 46 year old single stage paint, figure I will leave plenty for the next few decades!
Bit the bullet and ordered a new front bumper and rear bumperette’s from the local Toyota dealer, next day delivery! Installed them today.
Also rechecked all the valve clearances and retarded the timing slightly. Think it’s dialed in now after a...
Ha. I did the same thing. I guess good design is good design. I also created a "one way" baffle sump so that the sump always has fuel trapped in it for the off camber issues.
It can be done with the tunnel in place but you have to remove the rear motor mounts and tilt it all down.
Good excuse to remove the hump. Clean out under the fuel tank. Look for ammo and change. Line the hump with heat shield.
always fun to share build stories. It's a sure-fire way to learn!! Absolutely, report back on wiper and light switches!! Would love to know. Where are you mounting your Painless fuse box? I chose poorly on mine by mounting on the engine...
My family used to have a little place in the town of Ennis, Montana. We drove up there from Colorado quite a few times over the years, hastily traversing Wyoming on the way. For years I gazed at those mountain ranges across Wyoming and wanted to...
Wyoming 130 is a beautiful 2-lane scenic byway which crosses directly through the Snowy Range and Medicine Bow Mountains. It works its way up to some decently high elevations and to where we got off of pavement.
Things got really pretty really fast as we got off of pavement. This gradually became one of the roughest trails I've ever been on. Despite destroying two camp showers, spilling gasoline on gear, snapping a bolt on my trailer rack, breaking the...

Dave added the partial pipe for get the center of the rim on to make it easer to line up the studs at no charge. I am 67 now and 217 lbs at 6-3 but my strength is different then when I was 210 at 34. I got the 5...
To expand a bit on Jdc1's reply, you really want your primer to have the best adhesion possible to the metal. As such, why would you want to put some cheap and easy primer underneath the epoxy primer, potentially sacrificing its bond to the...
You took the trouble to carefully evaluate different color options for the other wheels to get the color exactly to your liking.
I'm missing something, because I don't understand why you wouldn't want the spare wheel and tire to match the other...
Completely agree.
The photo of the spare shows the rubber to be cracked more than a little. I wouldn't want to use a tire in that shape for actual use. So... it doesn't match the others and can't (shouldn't) be used.
I have a July 1978 production FJ40 and the body is all Toyota sheetmetal, and original to this vehicle. You mentioned your replacement tub is aftermarket and if I read your post correctly, your new firewall is as well.
The unfortunate reality is...
Cobalt or carbide bits for hard screws. Maybe a Dremel tool with a pointy burr or grind stone to cut into the x so the drill bits aren't doing an interrupted cut when starting.
Plenty of suggestions here but I'll share what worked for me after struggling to get 5 of the 16 screws loose. I got 11 free with Kroil and an impact driver. The others were stubborn.
I used a 1/8 bit to get a pilot hole. The deep screw ears...
