The fluid should always enter from the bottom. This ensures that the cooler is full of fluid and not air.

Finally getting around to doing this, got the OEM hose/hardline cluster into the truck last night, which took a lot longer than anticipated as the OEM winch solenoid takes up the same space as the bracket for the hoses, and requires the battery box to be removed on that side. Ran out of time and left the rad side hoses to the cooler loose for now. Bumping this so I can refer to it when I actually connect the trans cooler to the circuit.
Do you have a model number for that cooler? I'm going to get to my intercooler install this summer and will have to choose between a couple thin ones in series, or relocate as you have done. Any additional feedback on this cooler?I did the same as veiloctane but mounted this type of cooler because I had no room for a front mount because of the intercooler. Its still tucked up and out of the way and it works better then the front mount one I had before.

Greg I was able to fit a Hayden 679 cooler between the intercooler and AC condenser.... barely enough room and had to shim out the intercooler a bit, my temps are a little warm with all this extra power but I don't know if I can fit another 679, but anything else is possible

I shimmed the IC out a bit and there is less than 1" of clearance. Now that I am running 20psi things heat up quite a bit more on the tranny side. I had a 1 1/2" thick try-cool before and it helped keep temps under 200, now under city driving up and down hills I get close tom220 after a good hill that I can't get in lockup... I don't know if adding another cooler will help because of the heat shedding from the IC. Thinking the best bet would be remote mount with fan, but that gets expensive

I am considering a Derale Hyper Cool 13960 remote cooler with fan to cool the ATF. Idea was to mount it under the passanger side floor on my RHD HDJ81 because the front mounted IC I have installed is 3" thick and leaves very little room. I'm just not sure if I should go with the 13960 with 6AN fittings 3/8" line or the 15960 that has the 8AN fittings 1/2"line. I also have sliders to install which will protect the tranny cooler.

No they run to the transmission. I bypassed the radiator.
This works because your intercooler hangs down lower. Does your IC work well with the airflow being blocked by the winch?
I am adding a transmission cooler to my HDJ80 with the automatic transmission. I've traced verified that the flow path via my LX450 as follows:
Out of the transmission the fluid enters the radiator on the passenger side (RH) and exists on the driver side (LH).
Without the external cooler, the fluid is returned to the transmission.
With the cooler, the fluid is routed out of the radiator to the external cooler inlet port which is the bottom one.
Fluid exists the top of the external cooler and is returned to the transmission.
Here are some photos of the routing. Note the radiator is not installed.
Red = hot fluid out of transmission to radiator inlet on passenger side
Blue = cooled fluid return to transmission
Orange = fluid from radiator to external cooler. Without the cooler it is returned direct to transmission return tube.
There is a duplex hard pipe that is bolted just below the driver headlight. The hoses connect to it.
Fluid leaving the radiator (orange line) connects to the lower hard pipe and is then routed to the external inlet port (bottom) of external cooler.

This is a little confusing, but I haven’t gotten underneath to look at what is what. I have a RHD HDJ81 so things would be swapped the other way around on my vehicle? I found a slight leak on the engine radiator this weekend and need to replace it. Looking to add an external cooler as well. Trying to source an OEM HDJ81 radiator (with incorporated ATF heater/cooler) but I may have to go with an FZJ80 or Manual transmission version and fit an external cooler. I need to get underneath and label the transmission ATF lines. Thanks for posting.
Everything on your HDJ81 will be the same. No flipping. The oem radiator with built in transmission cooler I was able to purchase. Looks like you ordered it as well per another thread.
Once you look closer at your setup, the above diagrams will make sense. Just follow the arrows.

Ok, yes, I got under the truck last night and applied colored tape around the “Hot” and “Cooled” lines using your photos. Which is the “hot” in the picture below? Is the ATF Oil temp warning switch on the outlet to the cooler or on the inlet from the cooler? Thanks.
