my 1hz ingested some water and locked up. engine is out of the truck and is in need of a complete rebuild and probably some other parts too. there may be a bent rod in there. It's going to a local machine shop that does alot of tractor engine work and they're going to tell me exactly what's in need of replacing, but i would rather someone with experience source the parts and do the rebuild.
i'm in the memphis, tn area, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great.

Oh man...sorry to hear that. :(

dude, you need a long block. bent rod? ouch.

upgrade to HDT time....................

found a long block in au, but surely there's something in canada.

would the hdt bolt up to my h55? would the motor mounts be the same?

and the guy on the hood is my buddy who actually drove it off into that water.

12 valve HDT (1990-1995) uses same motor mounts, same peripherals (vacuum pump, ps pump, a/c compressor bracket, starter, etc).

Normally a 300mm flywheel and clutch is used (see the Isuzu clutch disk) but a 275mm 1HZ flywheel can be used with a heavy duty clutch.

A weekend job other than exhaust connection and how you hook up the air intake.

G&S might have an engine coming or idea on location.....

If you are going to rebuild the 1HZ,just buy a whole engine kit for about $1100usd + freight from Engines Australia.
I hope you havent damaged the crank but they are not too expensive used these days.

well, just heard from the machine shop and i've got six bent rods. he says the crank looks ok. who's the best source for parts? I plan on getting my machine shop hooked up with a source and letting him handle it.

how can i tell if it's a later model or early model 1hz? the folder that came with the truck has a note that says they believe it's a 97' or 98' model. the engine serial number is 0225092. can i look that number up somewhere?

also, are there some different parts that are better suited for a turbo i could use while i'm at it?

I got a little ahead of myself with that earlier post. I'm still trying to decide if i want to rebuild or replace it with a 1hd-t or maybe replace with a long block. I'm pretty sure i don't want to swap in another used 1hz.

Do your sums 1st.
A rebuilt 1HZ,if done right will be like a new motor. The one I have in my FJ73 runs as smooth as any gas engine and has good power .
Im not looking forward to selling the 73 : (

I've been wanting to turbo it since i got it, so i think now's a good a time as any. An upgrade to a turbo i'm thinking will be worth a little extra to me.

But maybe a good used 1HD T will be cheaper.

Occassionally there's a RHD HDJ81 in Canada that gets into an accident and is written off by the insurance company that shows up for sale here. If you buy one of those, you'll know at least part of the history of the engine and how well (or not) it's been running and the maintenance its received since arriving in North America. That would be a good bet for a 1HD-T to swap into your rig.

The next choice would be an engine from a reputable seller like G&S who have taken the time to go over the engine and made sure all the obvious stuff have been taken care of and maybe even have compression numbers for you.

I think you'll love the 1HD-T...still sorry to hear about your 1HZ though.

Absolutely. I think a remanufactured 1hd-t would probably cost too much for me, but a used one without the tranny and transfer i think would be reasonable.

At this point you could also consider a 12HT.

As for remanufactured engines, you can get good engine kits for all the toyota diesels for under $1300. It depends on how much you would pay for a tired 1HD T etc and how much machiniing and assembly would cost.
The other bonus of getting a good used engine is that it would be on the road much quicker.

Is your mate who was driving going to chip in?:D

G&S has a couple of 1hd-t drivetrains, but are reluctant to separate the engine only and rightly so.

my understanding is the 1hd-t is a "dead-easy swap" and would only require changing the exhaust and intake. would the 12ht be the same?

i have seen rebuild kits for that price, but after talking with someone about realistic rebuild costs i started looking for a 1hd-t. i'm not ruling out the 1hz, though. it has been a good engine.

Now, let's see some carnage pics! :D[/QUOTE]

the engine is at the machine shop now, but i'll see what i can do. i still haven't seen the 6 bent rods.

yeah, he said he would do whatever it takes. i can't blame it all on him, though.

I've located a low mileage 1hd-t engine and it seems like it will cost about the same as it would to rebuild my 1hz and add a turbo to it. so my question is this:

which would be a better runner: a rebuilt 1hz and aftermarket turbo or a 1hd-t with low miles?
