any 1hz mechanics in the south?

I would probably take the low mileage(if its proven to be genuine) 1HD T over the rebuilt 1HZ T.
1 Less headaches from engine rebuilders with limited toyota diesel experience
2 Back on the road quicker.
3 The 1HD T is a purpose built turbo engine with thicker pistons,direct injection and lower compression ratio. In short, it may well outlast the 1HZ T
4 More bling factor with a factory turbo,other american cruiser owners will be green with jealousy:D
 
At least here in Central America there really is no difference between how they run. I have a 1HZ in my 40 and friends have 1HZs in 70's and 1HD-Ts in 80s. They all run about the same on the highway and on the trail. This choice may come down to $$ and availability of the part, i.e. how long will you have to wait for either and is waiting time even an issue for you. That said I agree with Roscoe as he makes valid points.

yeah, but if you compare each engine in the same truck the 1hd-t has got to be a better runner. 40's and 70's are lighter than 80's.

this is my daily driver, so i'm trying to get it back on the road as quick as possible. waiting on parts from au is not at the top of my list, although if i find a complete engine i could rebuild this one for another project.:idea:

Yeah, why not get the 1HD T and rebuild the 1HZ as a spare for when your friend drives into the water next time.

what's a 1hz core with stress tested rods worth?

Never seen one with stress tested rods before,but a core is worth a few hundred.
I got one for $500 with a low klm pump and other bits and pieces
 
6 bent rods???

well, just heard from the machine shop and i've got six bent rods. he says the crank looks ok. who's the best source for parts? I plan on getting my machine shop hooked up with a source and letting him handle it.

I thought at any point in time, half the pistons were on there way north while the other 3 were on their way south... That means 3 of the rods would have been PULLING THE PISTONS DOWN WHEN THE ENGINE LOCKED. How can those 3 rods bend even if their respective cylinder fills up with water??? :confused: Can someone school me on this?

Of course having 3 bent rods instead of 6 wouldn't really change the problem, except it just raises questions about the shop that made the diagnosis...:hhmm:

i think he had the pedal to the floor-maybe that would help get em' all bent? i have no idea and haven't even seen them yet.

the machine shop that has the engine has been in business for a long time and has done alot of work for the tractor dealership where i work, e.g., machine work on john deere engines, but he has never seen a toyota diesel.
 
how can i tell if it's a later model or early model 1hz? the folder that came with the truck has a note that says they believe it's a 97' or 98' model. the engine serial number is 0225092. can i look that number up somewhere?

also, are there some different parts that are better suited for a turbo i could use while i'm at it?

You can tell if it a newer or older one by the tentioner on the timing belt. older ones had a normal spring, newer ones had spring imbeded in tentioner, or a gizmo type setup.
 
my 1hz ingested some water and locked up. engine is out of the truck and is in need of a complete rebuild and probably some other parts too. there may be a bent rod in there. It's going to a local machine shop that does alot of tractor engine work and they're going to tell me exactly what's in need of replacing, but i would rather someone with experience source the parts and do the rebuild.
i'm in the memphis, tn area, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great.

I have seen this a few times in 1HZ's that is common if they go to bend the rods. Usually under extreme load in a very bad way.

This spare 1HZ engine I have somehow delaminated the crank on the cyl that got hydrolocked.
Maybe it bent a rod but I can see no physical damage to the rod.

Mechanics apprentice son and his friend washed the engine down with a high pressure hose after a panel shop sent it there to be cleaned up after a rollover.:D
Engine started and then locked up,never to run again at 146000k

The gizmo-type set-up is called an hydraulic tensioner.
