Hey guys

Are there any special mods to do to fit ome lockers in a non locker axle? I would assume its a direct bolt in but what about wiring?

Its alot easier to find a lower milage good condition non locked than locked. And seeing how I just wrecked my locked one:crybaby:, I have the lockers avail to me.

As always TIA

I am a newbie here too, but what I have learned so far is that the 3rd members are different also. You would have to change those out as a complete unit F&R. Then you have to wire it.
I think many have done it.
Have you done a thread search on it yet?????

Sorry about your wrecked 80, but it is cool that you still have the lockers.
I believe the elect. motors for the lockers are about $900 each.
Plus the other components= $$$$$$.

I am sure someone with more experience will jump in here and help you out too.

I did this ~8 years ago.

The non-lock rear axle housing is easily modified to fit the locker diff, using the diff gasket as a pattern.

The front housing is more problematical since the shape of the opening and the number of studs mounting the diff are different. It is possible (although quite challenging) to modify the the front housing. I used a new housing when I did it.

After that you need the front axle harness, ECU, switch, two indicator bulbs, the rear axle harness, the RH rear axle shaft.

In order to make the rear wiring true plug-n-play you will also need the floor harness and the rear sill harness for a locked vehicle (unless the vehicle is an LX450 in which case the floor harness has the wires in it).

I built my own harness from the quarter panel up to the kick panel.

If the axles are good, swap the whole axle.

. . . and since you'd have the wreck sitting right next to the unlocked, just swap all the parts you need directly over using the wreck as your 'guide'.

ouch...:frown:

Thats for the info boyz, now I have to decide if its worth buying back from the ins co.

Wow! that's a lot of work. Cdan, how much did it cost you to get a brand new front housing with the locking third already installed on it, if you don't mind me asking?

I don't recall the exact numbers at that time. The housing was bare and I installed the new diff in it.

Currently a new third and a new housing would be ~2,000 bucks.

As long as its a full float rear end. ;) Gotta watch out on the 93s (and early 94s I think) that aren't locked... They have a semi-float rear with drum brakes. That setup won't worky for adding the OEM electric lockers.

But, since you'd have locked axles, like someone said above, just swap both complete axles over (along with all the other necessary stuff CDan mentioned).

If you're wreckage is at or near $2k or so (or under) to buy back, and you've got room to put it somewhere, I'd say its a no-brainer to buy it back. Market on the used locked axles is around $2k or so...

Buy the whole wreckage, swap the axles, part the rest out.

I used Bostons write-up to install a locker in the rear of my daughters truck. Have the parts for the front, but am waiting on a great deal on the locker.
