Tim, Those look awesome and I think better than the stock grills.

The rear speakers are smaller so they don't sound as good as the fronts, but they were better than the pionners I had back there. Will have to compare our setups next time we see each other.

You are so damn creative!

The consensus among the club now is that LX speaker grills are deeper, because LX's came with superior speakers from the factory.. so far we've only got a couple data points to prove this, but it seems to be a pretty workable theory at this point.

Tim,

I'll try to rember to snap some pics of an LX grill and an 80 grill tomorrow...The :princess:s DS rear grill keeps popping off so I'll just grab it and check. Based on memory though the LX grill is considerably deeper.

Thanks for the follow up and the pics Nak.

Nicely done.

As promised, here are some pics of the grill off a '97 LX450 rear speaker and a '97 FZJ80 (AE for what it is worth) rear speaker.

The LX grill is on the left and the FZJ80 grill is on the right. As you can see there is a difference. About 3/8" difference in height to be exact. Diameter of each is almost identical (just a hair under 6") with the LX cover being about 1/8" to 3/16" wider.

Cosmetically the FZJ80 grill is 100% plastic while the LX grill is plastic but with an actual metal mesh cover.

For what it is worth, in looking at the front grills they look to be nearly identical -both fairly flat. The LX might have metal mesh on the fronts as well, didn't look that close...

Great pics Jeff. Thats shows clearly why it worked for us and not for Tim with the stock Grills.

If you want it to look really nice with the brownish door panels go to home depot or your local fix it place and buy some tannish flexstone paint. Paint the grills to match the door panels. Don't go nuts with it though as it will fill in all the mesh in the grill.

I'm running 6.5" Infinities front and rear. I'm using a spacer sort of like Nakman's to space the 6.5" out so it clears the windows when they are down.

hey gineric, I'm getting ready to put some 6.5's in the front and the back of my '91. Do you have a write up of progress or anything or know where I could find something like that? Something to help me make the 6.5's fit in the back. I'm using some Kicker's though. Actually slimmer than the Infinity's. Infinity's are 2" depth I think and Kickers are a tad bigger than 1 3/4". So not a lot, but still.
I have some Infinity 6022si's in my front now, but getting rid of them. They are 2 ohms and my stereo puts out 4 ohms. On their site it says they are safe for 4 ohm stereos, but I don't believe that.
I had to send in my New stereo because of a fxxxed up internal amp. Speakers and amp were both new (less than month maybe month and half old). Everything on stereo worked, but no sound. Checked the speakers and they were still ok. Speakers can't magically change impedance to fit the HU also. Kind of like how you have to match impedance of amplifier and subwoofer otherwise sub or amp could fry.
I bought the Infinity's cause I was looking for a slim speaker, not even noticing them being 2 ohms. Had to find something else though.
Just a heads up on those 6022si's. I know they are new this year. But hey they might work for you. I think they might be meant to be hooked up to an external amp that'll do 2 ohms though.
Sorry for threadjacking Romer, not meaning too. Just thought it was interesting seeing these speakers here, had to say something.
Again sorry for imposing.

Thanks for the pictures, Jeff... yup that pretty much proves our suspicions. So I am definitely on the lookout for some LX grills now... willing to trade for an over-the-stereo double-switch bezel, with mic holder. (don't hijack, search.. ;))

Yep, and pretty much shoots my thoughts of swapping the LX speakers into the 80 when I install the Infinities into the LX (some day I'll get it done)...

I can still do it but it won't be as simple of a swap as I originally thought it would be :o

Nakman,

How did you make your spacers and what is the material? They look great!

I'd like to make some for my Sony install, both front and back, to tweak it even further. Best case scenario would be to have the screw holes in the spacers to tie everything together. I'd like to put the spacers between the speakers and the door frame.

If this is Hijack, just say so and I'll PM instead.

Thanks!

That was more of a warning/telling about those speakers (personal experience) than a hijack. Only hijack part would have been me asking about 6.5 in back. Otherwise it pretty much pertained to these speakers.
Also I did search and still could find anything. And still searching.

Anyone have a 97 rear speaker still around? I trashed one before installing some pioneers that didn't sound nearly as good as the stock speakers, pioneers going back. PM'ing is fine, thanx.

Lugboot, my real job is rapid prototyping, so I've got access to a nylon sintering machine at work that will direct print nylon from 3D CAD data.. nice perk to have, for sure.

Abalone I think Romer still has his stock Pioneers, shoot him a PM and see if he wants to part with them.

Unless Abalone has a LX the rear speakers from Romer's rig won't fit...He will have the same problem you did Tim in that the stock rear Pioneers from an LX will be too big for the 80 grills to fit.

Not sure on the fronts between an LX and an 80. The front grills look the same to me but I didn't pull them off and do a stare and compare.

Sorry, yes need the LC rear speaker, don't need the bracket, but wasted the stock speaker. I did the infinity's a year or so ago in the fronts, did not keep the stock grills.

Well you could have my speakers then, but again I had to hack up & reuse the plastic trim ring for the Infinity.. so it's just a paper speaker at this point. But I guess if you still have the original plastic in tact then this would be a straight swap. PM me if you want them.

6022si

Romer,

I just bought some 6022si's to install in the front. When I opened the package there is a black plastic ring and a metal ring that look like they are supposed to be mounted to the door first. Did you use those or did you just mount directly onto the door and door panel.

From your posts it sounds as though you questioned whether there would be enough clearance between the speaker cover and the dash when the door was closed. I am worried that if I put those rings in there it will lift the speaker out enough that it won't clear.

Couple months old thread anyway Romer and the gangs,

Im about to buy these Infiniti front and rear speakers (6022si and 4022si) to replace my LX450 door speakers. My question, Is it possible to use the stock factory LX450 front speaker grill on the 6022si?

Or it just wont fit, I have to use 6022si Infinity speaker grill in the front ?
