Hello,

In this thread (https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=166851) you mentioned you'd have some infiniti speakers for sale. If there's an available set I'd like to get some. Let me know...

thanks,
Mark

Mark,

You need to PM Colorado80 directly but per the most recent post on the Rising Sun forum he has sold out all of the speakers he ordered. Maybe he can get more, don't know.

Romer, stupid question, but what do you mean by taping up exposed contacts on back of speaker? Do you mean when you attach the wires to the speaker, to seal those up really well? I know that water literally will drip down between the window and the weather stripping on the window into the door panel and onto the speaker. So weather proofing them i think is a must.

More for electrical reasons. There is a lot of exposed contact and they were shorting when we were putting them in and installing them.

Sunday I installed the 4022i's in the rear doors of my 93. I follwed Romer's points above and have the following comments:

:) I used a dremel guide point rotary bit to cut out the guts of the plastic bracket. Worked great (plastic shavings everywhere!).
 I had to cut out some metal to enlarge the door hole. I used the Dermel cutting disk.
 I was able to do all this without remoing the door panel.
:frown: I did remove the crosspieces inside the stock grill but it still will not snap on properly. I see my options as trimming the bracket further to get a better fit (lots of work and I'd hate to damage the plastic bracket) or getting or making some kind of trim ring to put behind the infinity grille as a spacer. Ken - was this an issue for you?
:frown: I could not get the for mounting tabs of the speaker to in any way line up where at least one of them was not blocking the grille clip holes. Solution: I removed one speaker mounting tab.
 Sounds good but not profoundly better. I probably need to spend some more time setting up the head unit.

FYI - head unit is Alpine CDA-7894 and I'm also running a 10" Kenwood subwoofer in a sealed enclosure (part of my storage drawers) off a 300W mono Blaupunkt amp.

Romer - thank you for your tips.

Can anyone say - audio contest at the Rising Sun Rally?

Daniel,
Maybe removing the door panel would have helped the grill fit.

I was able to get 4 screws in without removing any of the grill tabs. I think I took a dremel to one of the screw tabs to make it work.

Ok, I don't have the speaker grill cross member, and my grills don't fit. Any thoughts there Romer? It's obvious my new speakers are smashing into the grills before it can clip in.. I"ll post up a couple pics in a sec.

Sorry buddy, worked on a Lexus:D

I was going to try and find a slim round piece of plastic, kindof like a spacer or O ring between the door and the speaker grille to increase the distance from the speaker grill cover and the door. You happen to know anyone who can make special design stuff like that:rolleyes:

Those pics look like mine exactly. Did you try carefully pushing on the mesh to make more room?

Is there some room to shave down the top of the plastic bracket so the speaker goes in a little deaper?

I guess you guys are going for the OEM look, but why? Not hatin', just asking. I think along with the lift, racks, bumpers, sliders, winches and other accessories that are cleanly installed, but not OEM; why not go with the infinity speaker grills? show off the upgrade?

Ugh... because this looks like total crap. I tried to use one of the plastic nutzerts and the speaker is now twisted CCW about 5°. I can live with that.. and could always remount it straight. But what's worse is there's a huge gap behind it now, that would have been covered by the stock grill, had it fit.

this sucks, I should have got the Pioneers... so I guess either Q needs to come over and show me some magic trick, or I need to fab up something that mates the speaker with the stock grill. Or, at least fab up a spacer to fill the gap.

Sorry it didn't work for you Tim

Did anyone else get it to work like I did?

Yeah, I'll get it... I guess the new grill won't be so bad once I get it on straight and fill the gap. Or maybe I can get my hands on a set of LX grills...

I put the other side back together with the stock speaker, did a little test. The new one does sound better, more "bright" or "crisp." But to be honest, neither one is that great.. when I put it back in the front the new Pioneers sound quite a bit better. maybe that's just because they're bigger? I dunno... we'll test again with 2 Infinities in back.

Sorry Ken, do you have a gap in front where you had to use the stock grills? Yes I can make you a spacer, just tell me the OD, ID, and thickness you want and I'll bang them out. Here's quick sketch in case that's not obvious.. sorry for the WordCAD but it's late.. I'll end up making a set of these for the back if I can't figure out the stockers.. this will all have to wait until next week though, kinda got a big weekend ahead.

I used the Infiniti grills in the front,. they fit fine and the stocks in the rear. I would have used the infiniti grills if there wasn't the gap you see. Not sure I still have the grills.

I knew you would set your creative mind on it and come up with a solution.

The fronts will sound better because they are bigger. My fronts sound way better and I almost left the stock rears in as good as they sounded.

I have an idea of how to carve away at the stock bracket to seat the speaker deeper and hence use the stock grille. First need to determine how much clearance between the window glass and the magnet there is....

Tim - I'm in for a pair of your nifty spacers. Yesterday I was at Home Depot and meant to check some black PVC but forgot. My situation is eactly as yours.

Ken -I do not think removing the door panel was the issue for me at all. If I had taken a dremel to the speaker metal tabs I probably could have shaved a little here and there and made it work. Now I just hope its not a big deal if I go back to Infinity grills. I do not think it will be.

Sound quality: I can really crank it and get no distortion. Highs do sound cleaner. I also have the crossover set to keep the real lows away from my doors and let the subwoofer handle it. Still need to play a little.

I just did the Pioneer speakers today, 5.25" up front and 4" in the back. Used 1/4" nylon spacers for the front, some extra longer tapping screws in the rear to secure the speaker itself. Everything fit perfect and still had clearance behind the stock grills on both front & rear doors. I didn't bother taking pics since it only took like 15 min to do one side (front & back doors) and then 5 min to do the other side after I knew what to do. I have to take the door panel off again this weekend when I adjust my aftermarket keyless system so I'll snap some pics then. No cutting, no shaving, no drilling needed.

BTW, both sets of speakers ran me $100 at Circuity City, minus my 15% coupon I had so I paid around $88 OTD. Still running on the stock deck but that'll change soon since it doesn't like to play burned CDs.

That is a bummer. That gap would bug the living daylights out of me as well, it just not acceptable fit and finish. I was hoping to get a set of these and do this to my truck as well but now that I know they don't work quite as cleanly in the cruiser as the lex I might have to rethink a little. Keep us posted on what you do to solve your fit Nak. I for one am very interested, I have always been partial to infiniti over say pioneer or eclipse but that is just a personal pref.

Yea, i see the gap! That's not good. If it weren't for the gap though, i think the infinity covers look good.

Ok, I got my spacers made and they fit up as expected. Got the passenger side aligned straight, this is as good as this is going to get. The consensus among the club now is that LX speaker grills are deeper, because LX's came with superior speakers from the factory.. so far we've only got a couple data points to prove this, but it seems to be a pretty workable theory at this point. question to anyone else out there...

-Who with a non-LX has got the Infinity speakers to fit in the rear and managed to use the stock grills?

I am now on the lookout for an LX being parted out, would like to pick up an extra set of grills on the cheap. I'm going to try to borrow Romer's some time as well when he's not looking just to prove the theory in the mean time. :D Ok here are your pics:

the sound quality is improved now that the rear speakers are somewhat enclosed. These still sound kind of crappy though compared to the new Pioneers in front, the Pioneers have much more depth to them.. Once mixed together the two do sound pretty decent though.

couple more pics..
