The housing just snapped on me. I was pulling it out with both hands and it just broke in half and then broke itself off from the sensor. Can I still drive it? This is my DD so will it hurt anything else? Will it just be driving without ABS? And Cdan, how much is a new one? I need to make sure this thing is safe to drive before I take off to school tomorrow.

You need to get the rest of the sensor out of the hole and then plug the hole with something, if you leave the other half in there it could drop in and start carnage in the birf cavity, if you leave the hole open water, dirt, grime etc will get in and do the same.

after you get the rest of the sensor out and plug the hole (cork? stopper?) you can drive but you will not have ABS. and the ABS light will be lit.

PS make sure you are sitting down then Dan tells you how much the replacement is going to cost.

Well Im not even sure I can get te rest of this sensor out. I dont know how it got that jammed in there but Ill try with a pair of pliers or something. I guess Im going to have to take the hub apart if I cant pull it straight up. Oh, and also, by what you say, looks like im going without ABS for awhile.

you would have to do more than pull the hub to get to the back side, spindle has to come off by then you are most of the way through a birf repack so might as well do it.

Well damn hopefully I can do something to make sure my birfs dont get destroyed. Hopefully I can make something work for me.

I agree completely with RT.

Not sure what's inside an ABS sensor, but if there's a small hollow center, you might be able to extract it with an easy-out of the right size. Alternatively, you could go to the hardware store and get one of those lead expansion bolts, or even a plastic wall anchor to screw/bolt in and pull the sensor out with. Just be careful as these apply outward pressure and could jam the sensor in tightly...

However you end up getting it out, you can use the broken sensor to cover the hole.

I recall on an old thread Dan giving someone a price on the sensor(s)...there was a picture of his pups in the background with big smiles

Well I went out and tried to yank it out. Its not budging. So I put some silicone around it to prevent water from getting in for right now. Im gonna have to see what I can do in the next week or so to get it out.

well hopefully since it wont come out it wont fall in, my luck is always the other way though. if it drops down first thing that will happen is the iron tip of the sensor will strike the steel ABS ring sending metal all over, after the ring has ground the sensor small enough it will drop in completely and you have something resembling pieces of metal and plastic mixed with grease in a blender.

I'd be real nervous about leaving that in there...at least I'd use an expansion lag and hold it from dropping down with that.

Not to make this worse, IIRC the front sensors are a pair in the harness, the rears are individual. You should be able to get them from cruiserparts, would save you some $$, just may not be expedient.

Might try a magnet rod. They are long flexible sticks with a magnet at the end you can get at hardware or auto parts stores. Not sure it will be able to pick it up.

If the top is not greasy, might be able to use something really sticky to get it out. Tape at the end of a screw driver maybe.

Otherwise, looks like a front axle rebuild.

also, several trucks being parted out. Could get one there and splice it in

Dunno what the rest of the ABS sensor looks like but how about some JB weld quick set or super glue on the back of a nail/bolt whatever. Let it set for a few hours and then try pulling straight out with pliers? Or a simple drill bit may bite enough to pull it out?

Im not sure what will get it out. I figured with it being as tight in there as it is I dont think it will drop in. Im still going to work on getting it out though. Thanks for all the help. Hopefully for now the silicone sealant will hold water and stuff out.

Ill have to shoot it tomorrow. Or I might give it an attempt tonight. Sucks that this happened either way though.

The ABS sensor is a plastic tube with a magnetic tip on the end. See if you can use a small punch to rotate it inside the cavity. Nothing is holding it in except friction and old grease. Put a few drops (just a little) of PB to see if that will help.

Jim Phillips was able to epoxy the tube back to the top bracket after he busted his about 5 years ago. To remove the other one, you want to gently tap the bracket to rotate it a bit before you go gorilla trying to pry it out of the cavity.

Unless you break it into pieces, it shouldn't go any further into the knuckle, the tip will hit the ring on the birf. But, if it is resting on the ring and you drive, that may act like a grinder and shred the remaining pieces and drop them into the knuckle.

The other one just slipped right out so I figured that one would also. Too bad I was wrong and wrong in a bad way. But once I get it out ill see what I can do about he epoxy thing.

Bottom left hand corner is where it should be right around where its a little darker and shiny.
