Well I officially bought my first FJ60. It's a 1983 FJ60 with literally almost no rust. I've looked under the carpet in the usual places like floor boards, in the back of the rig and any where else I have seen before and nothing. There are almost no dents in her which is nice and surprising to see. Pretty much 100% stock and according to the owner who claims to be the third owner "it's never been off road" which is nice to think.

Well that's the good about it, the "bad" I guess is that the engine is in desperate need of a rebuild. It runs but not very well. The previous owner has had it parked for about six months or so I guess because it lost almost all power and started ticking. He told me he it "sounded like it had ball bearings rolling around inside" haha.

So once I got it home I started disassembling to the front end to prepare for the engine/transmission to be pulled. It has 195k on it right now. I am thinking that maybe the oil pump went out and he drove it like that for a while and it did some serious damage. But it's okay i've already found a great shop up in Waco that is going to rebuild the engine for me at a really great price.

What are your guy's thoughts on rebuilding the transmission and transfer case while i've already got it out? I have the tools and resources to do them both right here in my garage while the engine is out. Especially where I don't know exactly what condition they are in, should I look into it?

Anyway, here are some pictures of my 60 from a few days ago......

And this is her when I pulled into my garage for the beginning of the engine pull...

A little bit of progress, today i'm going to drain all the fluids and hopefully have time to dismantle the rest of the front..

Can anybody tell me what this is?

Nice rig. The box looks like an old Alarm.

Do the transmission and transfercase leak at present?

I thought I would do what you're thinking, so I tried to get mine apart. Replaced a few easy gaskets, but it leaks now haha. And I really have no idea if it was leaking before the rebuild either.

I would say if it isn't leaking now just clean it up on the outside and then put it back on.

I just got back inside from draining the engine oil and really got a good look at the X-fer case and transmission and lets just say if it can leak, this beast is leaking from it lol. There is about a half inch of oil/dust/dirt in some spots of the transmission and x-fer case and what appears to only be my favorite stuff in the world for a gasket..... yes...RTV not an actual gasket from what I can tell. So yeah i'd say it's all pretty much leaking.

Also, now that i'm in the process of draining all my fluids.... what exactly should I remove to be able to pull this motor? I know the front basically needs to come off but how about the front L/R clips of the rig? or can I leave it all on except for my radiator and all the other pieces that make up the front?

Any info is good info, I'm a noob when it comes to my 60, and yes I do know how to use the search tool i'm just trying to get a straight answers. What do I need to do/remove in order to pull my motor transmission and X-fer case?

Thanks a lot guys.

Well, more progress today i'm glad I took the day off from work! Got the front end pulled off and all the fluids drained. BTW if you didn't know like I didn't know, when taking the AC lines off step back or at least turn your head or you will likely be hit with the pink froth from the lines! :frown: it's all good live and learn!

I think the previous owner thought it was a good idea to add more engine oil when he was having issues because I literally had almost overflown my huge drip pan with engine oil (it was empty when I started) I was very surprised. No major issues so far, and very little rust at all if any (surface rust...so far) but the under carriage looks great just covered in oil and crud.

Well it's time for a glass of Whiskey and bed! Cheers!

Slight surface rust here where the front assembly meets the wheel well.... not bad at all....

The bushings inside the radiator mounts are completely rusted out...Need replacements....anyone know where I can pick some up?

This is the R/S lower radiator mount not so bad but I need replacement bushings and mounts!

I just got off the phone with my local Toyota dealership parts dept, and it turns out that two radiator mounts cost 332.00!!!! Seriously I was thinking like 25 or 30 but 332.00 is insane. Does anyone have any reccomendations or even any extra mounts for sale? Or will I need to make my own?

Ouch! Not sure if this is 100% helpful for these parts, but i'd check out SOR or similar for their parts fiche... Helpful sometimes to start there. Then i'd try to get actual toyota part #'s.

Some googling later you should have some online sources for those parts by #. Call CDan to compare prices and go with the lowest reasonable price. I typically give my money to CDan if he's close to the lowest since i know they are good guys. Getting the wrong parts suck.

HTH - GL!

Thanks i'm definitely looking around it's really not my #1 priority right now i'm waiting on a friend to lend me an engine hoist so I can take out the engine. Once that's out i'm going to have the transmission and X-fer rebuilt or just replace the gaskets if they are in good condition.

Either way, with good ole' google and the yellow book I should be able to find some before I put the front end back together.

Thanks for your input sl33py!

So I got my new motor in today.....hopefully it will line up nicely!

no big deal, just a 500HP turbo diesel Cummings motor/transmission/cooling system.... hahaha... I figured somebody might enjoy these.

I snapped a few photos with my Iphone at work today of the "pack" we pulled on a brad to find out where some coolant was leaking from... I still think it's pretty cool!

bling bling...sweetness.

Strange looking cummins. It almost looks like a flat 6 but maybe because of the lighting or angle. I know a cummins was modified extensively to run as a flat for the Bonneville raceway.

Yeah ours are built to be pulled as a single unit to be placed on a stand and ran/ tested on the outside of the vehicle to get access to the entire engine/transmission and cooling system.

Well, haven't had much progress this week so today after getting off work an hour early (aweeeesome) I started the process of removing the drive shaft and transfer case. I was really surprised how well everything went besides having to crawl in and out 100 times because I needed an extra metric wrench, or socket or extension etc. etc. however after about an hour or so I got the drive shaft covered in thick oil and dirt off and got my transfer case off without any serious problems.

Looking inside the transfer case I noticed how nicely the gears condition was. I don't see any mars or broken teeth and absolutely no metal shavings or chips (phew :D) that was a big worry of mine.

So i'll get some pics up soon hopefully later tonight. I'm still waiting on my friend to bring over the engine hoist so I can take this bad boy apart all the way and get it to the machine shop to get rebuilt so I can be on the road sooner!

Alright, time for some Texas BBQ!!
