Your pix and the running story are great, thanks for the detail. I'm preparing for a new engine and the info helps the thought process. Rock on.

Thanks man I appreciate it! I want to give back to this site in the same way I've enjoyed it and have learned from it so far and i'm always learning new things on here from other peoples experiences.

So here is some porn of my transfer case so far for everybody :D......

First was this wonderfully oil/dirt covered drive axle......

Easy, and did all this by myself.... sorry there are no in between pics of taking out the bolts or anything, it's pretty straight forward. However I know somebody will say it or at least think it, yes I did take my transfer case off a little wrong I think. I ended up splitting it in half leaving one half attached to the transmission :o it's okay though it's not really a major deal it just happened out that way. I need to take some more time today hopefully to get the other half out and then i'll have the entire bit out.

wonderfully preserved no chips nada! i'm stoked! so i'm not going to rebuild i'll end up just replacing the seals/O-Rings.

Also, all these needle bearings are not siezed up or anything weird like i've seen in the past on other vehicles.

Oh an took my hood off so I can start messing with my carb with better light....since i'm still waiting for my hoist..... BTW if your doing this have a friend or it will likely come crashing down onto the ground of your garage like happened to me  haha yeah, live and learn i'm glad these things are built like tanks because it probably would have had a gigantic dent or bend in the hood if they weren't!

So thats it for today, I need to get some wire brushes to clean up my transfer case and get my carb off so I can rebuild it....off to the HW store! cheers! have a good weekend!

Frame looks pretty clean, my FJ60 came from texas too, got to love that climate.

Well here it is, my buddy came through last weekend and today I finally got enough time to pull this bad boy. Seriously, this thing is a beast to see out hanging there by a chain. It's the first engine i've had the experience to do outside of work ever, and I have to say it's much more enjoyable to do these things with out the obstructions of people and bosses watching you and making sure your doing everything 100% correctly and making sure your not taking too much time to do something yada yada, you can just take your time making sure everything is right and enjoy yourself in the comfort of your own home! it's been fun so far, and i'm glad!

I did forget however, to remove my shifters inside the rig *woops* haha I laughed after about a couple of minutes of "what the heck? everything is disconnected why isn't this coming out yet?" and scratching my head wondering WTF? haha it's all good like I say live and learn. Here's some pics.

I took a lot of time labeling almost EVERYTHING that I disconnected, it was time consuming but it will be well worth it when hooking up the TRILLION vaccume lines that are in this bad boy.

Also, I had a hell of a time removing my Carb the night before, ended up having to grind off the rear right bolt closest to the engine. If anyone has done this, you know there is not a lot of room to get back there so after the nut was stripped out and not turning due to rust I had to grind it off! oh well, I need to order some replacement parts from SOR, a few hoses that I found that were very dry rotted, few cables, now a few bolts that were rusted beyond salvaging, heat shroud for my carb and a few other misc odds and ends.

All in all this project is going really well and i'm very stoked to be doing this! Thanks for all the great info everybody puts on here, I would be up a creek without a paddle if it wasn't for all the good stuff on here. BTW does anyone have a diagram of which wire goes to which cylinder from the distributer? I said I labeled everything, well I got carried away and just pulled them off the plugs without even thinking about marking them for later use. I'll do a search but if anyone can tell me off the top of their head it would be great! Thanks a lot!

Thanks for posting your progress. It was fun to read and I look forward to seeing the outcome. That is a massive looking diesel that's going in place of the old engine. Anyway, good luck and keep the pics and info coming.

Well sorry to confuse you, the engine on the ground is the same motor I pulled and it's not diesel. I'm having it rebuilt in the next week or so. I pulled it out with the transmission attached, that is why it looks so massive!

But thanks for reading, it's a lot of fun doing this and I enjoying showing my progress!

The plug wire terminals are labeled right on the dissy cap. And OE wires are labeled right on the wire.
They tried to make it as simple as possible for working on it in the field.

BTW, that is not the right alternator. The correct alternator has the regulator clocked on the top outside. The wrong (cressida) alternator has the regulator clocked on the inside, pressed against the hot coolant hose. Electronics should not be heated, they don't like that.

So the past few weeks have been slow, Not a lot of progress. I did manage to mostly rebuild my carb in between dismantling my engine in preparation for the rebuild i'm doing.

Once I finally got EVERYTHING off and managed to get the engine on a stand and remove the oil pan this is what I saw...

Yup, metal shavings. All the pistons and cylinder's look pretty good actually besides your normal wear and tear. But upon further inspection and more dismantling I found that the bearings on the crank for the 5th & 6th cylinder were pretty much obliterated. Luckily it wasn't ran much after this happened because no further damage is apparent!

Here are the bearings....

This is the 5th cylinder's left overs....

So, here in the next few weeks a valve job, .20 over bore, new pistons, gaskets, oil pump, bearings, paint and timing gears will be replaced as well as a new cam or possible re-profile from delta cam.

My questions are
1. What are some recommendations for pistons
2. What are some recommendations for all my engine bearings
3. Should I send my stock toyota cam with almost 200k on it to Delta, or replace with a new cam and if so from where?
4. Do I really need new lifters? as mine look perfect

Arrggg.... what a mess.....

My next move is to clean this pile up and organize!!

Just do a 1mm overbore and be happy with the extra 100cc of displacement. Price is the same. And that still leaves a 1.5mm overbore for the next time.

1. Toyota or FederlMogul or Sealed power. I try to stay awy from the real cheap taiwanese stuff like ITM. The finish machining is not as nice on them.
2. Clevite will actually be NDC japan (oem) for much less than dealership prices.
3. yes, either regrind or replace w/ new Melling or sealed Power billet.
4. the only way lifters can be reused is if they go back in the same hole on the same cam. A new/reground cam requires new/reground lifters.
