Just bought new stereo and speakers but after tearing into dash realize a DIN install is anything but easy or common. So thinking of putting stereo in the slot in center console and running all new wire to speakers anyhow.

What to do with hole in dash from stereo....

- find oem and stick back in there for aesthetics

- find inclinometer to install there instead of in normal spot below

- get a dual gaug DIN pod and put an oil pressure and water temp gauge to augment oem...if I desmog wont have vacuum so that is a waste...and though oem are not accurate i know where they sit so watching oil pressure and water temp is good enough already maybe. if I had dual battery would put second battery voltmeter on one....

recommendations...ideas? Maybe oil temp and outside air temp. Manual tranny so no need for trans temp....

It would make a great spot for your ARB locker buttons.......if one had ARB's..???

Or switches for all accessories and aftermarket gadgets???

I left mine open with wires hanging out so it looked like I was robbed already... Never got hit again ;)

I'd go with a cb or switches if you have a bunch of lights.

And then just put the inclinometer where it belongs :D

Replacement radi: I managed to pop-rivit the new radio's 'cage' to homemade brakets that replaced the orig radio brackets; slid new radio into it's cage.

CB : got a thin unit, maybe 1 inch thick, 4 or 5 inch wide...slide (jamb fit) into 'pocket' in dash above ashtray / under radio....cut back of plastic pocket . . ./it hasn't slid out yet (and I've been offroad with this setup)

ARB Controls : 3 after market lit rocker switches mounted on bakalite 'handy box', velcro fastened to bottom of dash lip, above & right of drivers gas pedel foot . The velcro stuff is so i can remove handy box & replace the cheap arse lit switches :-)
ARB compressor located in left rear cargo area 'behind' panel, forward of washer bag.

GPS & SIRIUS tuner: built (folded) metal sheet material , lip goes under dash by defroster outlet; rectangular magnets keep it from sliding forward. Front of the sheet material has turned up 'tabs' to affix GPS mount & SIRIUS radio 'saddle' . . .wire harness for all that stuff runs just under windshiled gasket / fore of defroster outlet (little 'trough' there....)

Clever, eh ?

I went with guages by using this 15 dollar piece from a company called glowshift- it hasnt budged in 2+ years of hard mall wheeling.

me too... but i really was robbed and never put it back in to keep from being hit again.

Smkymntn put a 3 gauge panel in his radio slot, it looks clean and is functional.

I like it so much that I'm going to do the same thing. I found the plate here Universal Triple Gauge Single Din Radio Face Pod I just moved my CB to the pocket location, removed the radio and put an MP3 amp below the console. Should be nice if I get out there and finish it up.

EDIT: So Adam was faster than me in replying, but I had a hard time finding the stuff, so I'm gonna leave the repost! :flipoff2:

Yeah... I have similar deal.... aftermarket radio in console and I plan on setting up my guages in the former radio "hole"..

what are your three gauges monitoring for you? Where did you get the actual gauges and connection hardware to make them legit? Looks like Oil Temp, Oil Pressure and Water Temp...

I am thinking about Oil Temp, Water Temp, and either Fuel Pressure or Ambient Temp...since my OEM gauges work pretty good and I know where they are set normally...so any changes will be noticed.

You got it right oil temp/oil pressure / water-
For the vdo guages I used - a harness had to be built- there are better options that will come with the wiring etc. My stock gauges work well- but with occasional electronic weirdness in a 20+ yr old vehicle- I like a backup- the VDO gauges are electronic by the way.

smkymntn-

I've got that same GlowShift gauge panel, but I haven't installed it yet because there's hardly anything for its tabs to grab on to. Did you do anything special to keep it in place, or did you just jam the panel in there?

After looking at the ugly fit of my pioneer for 15 years, I am putting the stocker w/ it's bezel back in the dash and putting something modern in the center console.

I already have an inclonometer in the sandwich holder spot.

I like my stock gauges personally.

I was hoping to put the stock radio back in as well...but my father cant remember where he put it when it was replaced almost 10 years ago. :(

So it is either more gauges to augment but not replace the oem.......or buy a radio from someone to put in there.

go to the hardware store and get a sheet of black plastic and cut it out to make a filler plate

Looking at relocating my gauges and using this panel. Was there any modifying you had to do to either the radio opening or gauge panel itself?
