Girl talking here so be patient please....I changed the oil in my cruiser and I was told it takes 5 quarts. 5 quarts just barley registered oil pressure....so I put one more in and not much of a change. No leaks dip stick is the original one (showing oil is very low). I do not want to over fill. What is the oil capacity???? Help Please!!!!

what engine? I think the 2f/3fe take around 8-9qts. last time i change the oil in my fj62 it took around 8.5 qts.

they are big engines and take alot of oil.

maby a 4cyl would take 5qts.

no owners manual?

good luck

The engine is stock straight six.....
I changes the filter, spark plugs and air filter. It has a oiler cooler. I am learning.... thank you cruiser GODS!!!!! :):) It did pass emissions thanks to all the suggestions.

yeah this is a great place the po told me that when i bought my 60 seems like a lot of oul isn't it usually like 1 qt per cyl basically (i know the lt size of the engine has something to do with it but im not one for convirsions)

burlew, if you are going to work on your rig yourself you absolutely need to get an engine manual and the emissions manual. The Haynes guide is a great place to start and has all of the engine capacities, tourque settings etc... Chiltons guides are worthless.

yup..thats what I have is Chilton's guide, and no this is as far as I take it. Anything harder than what I have done I wlil be calling a mechanic. Thanks again!

8.2 quarts is the official number

Back in the old days most American cars took 5 quarts of oil.

Toyota's 2F engine take 8.5 US quarts when changing the filter also.

When you have a question, at least give your model (FJ60 assumed) and year.

There is lots of information on this site, try the search feature and if you plan on continuing to "changes the filter, spark plugs and air filter" get a FSM or other repair guide.

BTW, if you are newbie, welcome to mud.

Throw that thing in the bushes as far away from you as you can get it. Now throw some rocks at it and spit in it's direction!

Get a Haynes. You'll be surprised by how much you can do yourself if you just try. Oil changes aren't the only easy maintenance items. And even if you do go to a meachanic for easy stuff at least you can read about the work and know whats being done. It will help you know when a mechanic is BS'ing you or trying to do work thats not needed.

I have a question about changing the oil with a cooler. FJ62, did oil change, and Toyota filter. When I refilled with oil, it only took about 7.5 qts. to reach full line on dipstick. Is there a way to aslo get the oil out of the oil cooler?

Best thing is watching someones face as they keep checking the oil level after putting in 4 quarts. I'd let
the local lube place change oil & some maintenance as I seemed to pass the safety inspection without a hitch (I would also put in a burned out taillight, just so they would find something minor to fix... )

On the oil cooler, you only notice that the first time you fill it. Don't worry about trying to drain it.

One tip... with the new filter sitting upside down in the box. Fill it up with oil! Look at the oil level when the oil gets "sucked up" into the filter. Just fill it up (almost a full quart!). Very little comes out when you flip it over and spin it in place. Best part is when you start the engine, you have oil circulated almost immediately. Purging a quart of air (dry filter install) isn't the best thing for the engine. Also one reason I do my own filter changes.

Welcome to mud.... sigh '82 cruiser in Texas doesn't have to pass smog.... something I'll have fun with my '87...

Next thing is to post pictures.

For some unknown reason we all like to look at pictures.

i put in 8 qts and 1 can of "restore" the v8 formula and its is perfect.

I can never get more than 7 quarts in before the dipstick says full. That's with a filter change, and letting the oil drain for a long time from a hot engine. I've got a new oil pan, too.

Follow the dipstick. Don't put too much in, or it'll froth up.

You might have some major sludge issues or a really big dent in your oil pan.

I wondered about sludge. That's actually one reason why I got the new oil pan. That and I was getting really low oil pressure. So I got a new oil pump and pan put on at a dealer. Oil pressure is great now, but I still only get 7 qts. in there.

I had the valve cover off several months back, and didn't see major sludge.

I've read a little about using Delo 15w-40 to clean out sludge (more detergents). Anybody had experience with doing that?
