hey all, i am installing an AA bellhousing conversion from my 4 speed, to a sbc. the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel that they offer is way to expensive for me, so i was wondering if anyone knows what i can buy from napa or wherever that will work. they say i need a 168 tooth flywheel, so if i buy a 168 tooth chevy flywheel for my engine will the pilot bearing fit my 4 speed? also do i have to buy a toyota pressure plate or will something else fit the spline on my 4 speed? any info would be great, also if anyone gets a chance to help out with my post from yesterday, i would greatly appreciate that also. thanks in advance...

When I bought my '74 40 it already had a SBC, AA bellhousing and 4spd trans. I drove for a couple years with no trouble whatsoever. It wasn't til I replaced my motor that I found out it was running the stock Chevy truck clutch, pressure plate, and pilot. Never did use any of that expensive stuff they recommended. Now I'm running SM465 so I still use chevy truck parts. Cheap and you can get them anywhere.

The CF part numbers are as follows:
disk: 383735
PP: CF165473S
These are for an internally ballanced pre-86 350 with a 168 tooth pressure plate.

buy your 168 tooth flywheel . or get one from the junkyard . and get it resurfaced . get a chevy pilot bearing it will work on the 4spd .toyota tranny . i found during my conversion to not push the pilot bushing all the way in .leave it sticking out a bit to fully support the tranny tip . and buy this clutch combo pack from napa
54-62 235 Eng. w/11" Cl. H.D. F.D. 11-10-1 1/8 (standard) MU5473-1B $149.01
it should work . but make sure the preasure plate looks similar to the one in the pic

i know from experience that this preassure plate works # CA5473 ,well it worked for me . same one in pic

Great info. I am confused about your post and hence my statements about the Centerforce.

Combo pack. Do you mean this is a disc and pressure plate sold together? What is the part number, MU5473-1B?

Is the CA5473 a pressure plate only? I was unable to find either of thses Napaonline.com

The number quoted by pbgbottle, CA5473, is the exact number on the pressure plate that Centerforce supplies....it is just painted over! (LUK makes them BTW) It isn't clear if the FD that comes with that PP will work. And of course, I think you have to get the special (I think it is special?) TO bearing that fits on the toyota release arm. YMMV.

Cheers!

here are the part #'s i used for my setup and i just use the toyota t.o. bearing on this preasure plate ,with toyota fork . i buy these at lordco in canada
preasure plate FENCO CA5473

thanks pbgbottle, this should work with the 305 right? i think the flywheel is probably the same as a 350??? thanks again

V8 Fj40

You need to know what model block you have when you buy your flywheel.
Pre 86 blocks were two piece rear main seals. 86 and up are one piece rear main. The one piece rear mains engines are not completely internally balanced, so it is a different flywheel. When I did mine, I think flywheels were about $70.00 from Autozone/Advance auto parts.

86 and up heads have centerbolt valve covers also. If they are the original heads.

The 168 tooth flywheel will accept a 11" clutch.

I took my flywheel and toyota clutch disc to the local parts store and he got me a pressure plate and clutch disc for about $130.00.

I can probably get part numbers off mine. It is all tore apart in my shop.

J.R.

thanks J.R. if you can get the numbers that would be great. im pretty sure its a pre 86 block, ill check today to make sure. thanks again.

i did my 69 and used a clutch from an 85 chevy 2wd pickup with hydraulic clutch and the stock toyota to bearing .thats just me ,i used to have the chevy flywheels redrilled and tapped and use the stock diafram clutch that toyota used and they worked well for many years .the 85 truck clutch seems to be short throw and works well .

I pretty much followed PBGBOTTLE and it seems to have worked for me. I have a few pictures and part numbers on my build thread. I apolagize I do not remember what page but it has got to be atleast half way throug to save you time searching.

If you use a luk 11" low diaphragm clutch to fit a 1970's van with a four speed, a 2F throw out bearing, and a chevrolet pilot bearing not fully seated it will be more than ample for your 305.
Don't try to save money by using a remanufactured clutch. I made that mistake once with my stock F motor and had to redo the clutch job within 5000 miles because a small spring broke in the clutch. It was a $300 mistake.
